2002 Excursion 4X4 Deisel. I'll try to be short. I replaced the drivers door actuator with a new one from Ford. No change. Here are the symptoms:
None of the power door locks work, either with the remote, the keypad, or the door switches. The automatic lights don't work. The dome light doesn't come on when the doors are opened. Radio stays on for 10 minutes after the truck is turned off. Light on dash indicates doors are open all the time.
I have read the posts in the past about actuators and VSM's. Could it be an actuator in another door? My next move is to take it to the dealer to have the VSM replaced. Any help would be appreciated. I would like to benefit from others experience. I do EVERYTHING myself usually, so taking it to a dealer doesn't please me, but if it's the VSM I understand they have to transfer the computer program.
Thanks, Ryan. |

VSM? On my old '01, the door lights were controlled by the GEM (Generic or General Electronic Module). I eventually had to get my GEM replaced simply because my horn stopped functioning. And yes, it had to be done by the dealer. It also meant reprogramming the keys and fobs, plus I had a new factory access code specific to the new GEM (those can't be changed). Good luck, and remember that while most dealers are not bad, they're all expensive.
PS - Welcome to the X-Files! |

Thanks. Anyone try putting one in from a salvage vehicle with the same engine and options? Might be a good way to test if it is the problem, and a lot cheaper. |

I suppose you could obtain one from a salvage yard, but you would still need the remote fobs and a couple keys that came with (were programmed with) the vehicle being salvaged. And you still would not get the factory access code with a used GEM. This is a component that would best be obtained from a dealer ... and installed by a dealer. Besides, would a used GEM have an electronic record of air-bags being deployed from the salvaged X? Who knows? IMHO, there are too many variables to go the used-part route. |
