| Quote: | | I can add the centramatics made a big difference in my x. I still have a minor vibaration at 80 mph and will look at drive shaft issues. I wonder if the driveshaft could be diagnosed by slipping the transmission into neutral and coasting to see if the vibration stopped at speed? | Hey Phil, how long have you had your centramatics?? Because I am seriously thinking about getting a set. I hate out of balance tires!!! I called them up, they said I would need part #300-308, cost would be $199 for a set of 4. Is this the same as what you have??? |

Coasting won't work since it will still be spinning at speed because it is connected directly to the axle and if the tires are spinning so is the shaft. Easiest way is the method I described earlier...safest and more costly is to bring the shaft to a specialist who can put it on a machine and balance it for ya.

If you are travelling at speed and shift into neutral, your driveshaft still rotates since it's mechanically linked to the differential/axles, doesn't it? That won't help you diagnose a driveshaft problem.
I had good results from rotating my driveshaft 180* at the differential. Vibration problem gone. It takes only a few minutes and could be a potential fix.
I also agree with an earlier post to check your ball joints as some here have reported premature failure and subsequent vibration/handling problems.
Sounds like your problem arrived with the tires, so I'd certainly start there. And I don't think 41 lbs. is enough pressure, but I don't know the specs on your tires. See my (long) post on optimal tire pressure.
I also upgraded to 17" rims and Hummer 2 tires (315's-cheap source of take-off's from the delaer, $400/set brand new). That made a HUGE diffrence in ride quality over the crappy Firestones that the X came with. Nice and quiet and great in the rain. I run them at 50 psi F/R and am getting very even wear (I don't tow).

I have had the centramatics for a month now and I also paid $199. Before installing, the wear on my michleins was slightly uneven, truck drivers claim reduced and more even wear. I will have to wait and see. If you are keeping your x for a long time or if you trade to another x in the future, I believe they are a good investment. Professional truck drivers are on to something. |

Probably on of my next purchases. I hate out of balance wheels, and am yet to find a shop that can balance them good enough for my ultra sensitive butt(on all our cars, not just the X). |

Well I am off to the driveline specialist to have them turn the shaft on the machine. Sounds like that will make the difference. |
