First of all, this is actually a post regarding a '97 Expedition, not a pickup. I apologize for not posting it in the SUV section, but there seemed to be a lot more activity on the F-Series board and mechanically, they're very similar. The truck has a 5.4 V8, and has around 67,000 miles.
My wife had an accident yesterday. I'm not sure whether the problem was with the idle control, or whether the throttle stuck, but the truck accelerated as she was turning into our driveway, and she couldn't slow down adequately with the brakes. She ended up clipping a tree, and having to slam it into park to keep from going through the garage.
Fortunately, she was not hurt and there were no other vehicles involved, but I'm now looking at some body work. More importantly, though, I want to find out what caused the engine to race like that. If she had been in traffic when it happened, someone could have been seriously hurt.
Here's a little more info that might help diagnose the issue. First of all, the temperature was very cold (-18 Farenheit); however, the truck was warmed up, and she had already driven it 15-20 miles. It definitely was not a result of her foot hitting both the accelerator and brakes at the same time. She called me to come home, and when I started it up, the engine was racing at about 3,000 RPM. I shut it off and later went out to look around under the hood, and when I started it up, everything seemed normal. I have not driven it since.
This isn't the first time we've had a similar problem, but it is the most severe. Over the weekend, I drove it, and it never came off the high idle; however, it was not THAT high. The same thing happened to my wife last week.
The dummy lights are not displaying any fault codes, so I'm guessing that a diagnostic check at the dealer would not show anything.
Anyone BTDT? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Brian,
Sorry to hear about your Exp.
I own a '01 Expedition that did the same thing. When you step lightly on the accelerator pedal, it would stick and the only way to correct it is to stomp on the pedal quickly.
According to the dealer, the throttle body was built up with carbon and when I got it back, it was fine.
Unfortunately, it cost me $175.00 to figure it out. You can easily do it yourself.
