Hi all. Ok Here is the problem. My dad had recently bought a 71 Ranchero. He decided to remove the clutch fan and install an electric fan, The cooling fan NEVER shuts off however. He wants to install a temperature switch for it so it will but he hasn\\'t as of yet. At the same time he also put in an electric fan for his a/c system. He also decided to instal a mallory HEI system. He is still running the same size 100 amp alternator though and I have noticed the car don\\'t like to start after running for just a small amount of time, say 20 miles @ 70 mph. The battery is fairly new and holds voltage @ 13.0. While running, it shows 13.5 so I would assume the alternator is working as well. My concern is that while driving it from Tampa to Ocala, about 3/4 of the way home that darn thing acted like the battery went dead and died on me. When I hooked up jumper cables, it cranked and started just fine however driving down the road just a small bit, the car began to act like the battery was dying again. Now, I am wondering if due to the excessive load on the charging system, while it may be charging properly, might the alternator not be able to push enough amps due to high demand and be causing the battery to do all the work? I only seem to be able to find things on higher amp alternators when running massive stereo systems. Sorry to be so long winded.

Seems to me that most of the stock alternators in the early 70s Fords were either 35 or 60 amp.
Unless the alternator in your dads 71 has been updated that might be the problem.
There may also be something else loading the electrical system that\\'s keeping the battery from charging properly while driving.
You might try asking this question on the Ranchero.US forums...
I think you\\'ll stand a better chance of getting expert advice there.
