Hey guys, whats up last year in May I purchased a 1993 Grand Marquis LS. I can hear the transmission going. I want to replace the transmission, and I know its going to be expensive. What I was thinking was if I was going to replace the transmission then why not replace the engine as well as the transmission. I was thinking about one of the new 5.0L Fords. I\\'m going away to Basics and AIT for the army for about 5 months and I will have about $10,000 saved up by then. Would that be enough, I was thinking about doing the swap myself because I am going into the Army for mechanics on the Humvees so I figured I Could use my knowledge from there. What kind of work would I have to do in order to make the swap work? What kind of electrical work would be required?

The Coyote swap hasn't been done yet in any of these(CV, GMQ, LTC), it has been talked about but not tried. You would be required to document EVERYTHING and report back if you did it.
Look up 4v 4.6 swaps to get some idea on what you would need to do, it is not an easy project but would be worth it in the end for sure.

If you can locate a Coyote equip Mustang with an automatic as a donor car, you probably could do it. You would be replacing engine, transmission, wiring for engine area, PCM, and all the sensors and wiring. Go check out what some of the junk yards are charging before you commit to this. $$$$

The 4.6L and 5.4L 2-V and 4-valves have been done. Go check out www.crownvic.net and do some research. A couple of guys even put a manual trans in. The biggest problem has been making sure you have the proper computer (PCM) for the engine/transmission combo.

If you go with a 4-valve engine, the master cylinder will have to be relocated (it gets real tight there) or go to the hydro-boast brakes from a Mustang. /F-250 to have enough room. Another problem is the hood clearance with the Aeros (1992-1997). Sometimes the engine touchs the hood underneath. Some guys have gone with fiberglass replacements, while others had their hoods rebuild from metal to raise it about 1 1/2 inches leaving about 4 inches of the outside area alone and raising the middle.

Getting back to the new 5.0L. the parts you will need to complete the entire project almost does require you to have a donor car. There are so many small parts needed that the stealership will make a killing off of you. DO YOUR RESEARCH ONLINE FIRST before committing. It can be done. It has been done. But how much do you want to pay?
