Here is another common style of bulb, I like these better then the spirals but due to how long it is it doesn't always fit in fixtures very well.

Heres an example of where one of the thin long fluorescent bulbs as pictured above would work well, this piano light has good crips colors.

Some of the compacts can get really compacted! Here is a mini compact. has the 1/2 inch screw in base and uses 4 watts of electricty but puts out about 20 watts of light.

This is a compact fluorescent light fixture, it has about 130 watts of light output, and the bulb is changable, but chances are you won't ever have to change it unless you leave it on everyday of the year.

Here is a more standard looking compact fluorescent bulb, it puts out about 40 watts of light and only uses maybe 12-13 watts of electricity

This is just an example of how small the bulbs can get, this sucker puts out 60-65 watts of light yet only uses maybe 15 watts of electricty.

This is a T-8 Fluorescent bulb in a T-8 fixture. The fluorescent bulb is thinner then that of a T-12 (what most people are used to) The T-8 uses less energy then the T-12 and uses a different type of ballast. You should NEVER EVER EVER use a T-8 b...

These bulbs are T-12 bulbs, notice how they are larger then the T-8s. Never use a T-8 bulb in a T-12 fixture. It will overheat the ballast causing failure or even fire.

Here are 2 Cool white T-12 bulbs and 2 Warm White T-12 bulbs. You can tell the bulbs are getting old by how dark they are getting at the tips.

Here is a picture of one of those Warm White T-12 Bulbs. Guarenteed Long Life indeed! It's been in this fixture which has seen alot of use since the late 80s!

These suckers are 60 inches long and put out about 110 watts of light EACH. I have 2 fixtures in my garage, they make GREAT shop lights for working on my Vic and my Truck.

and for kicks, this is a LED nightlight, uses only 0.2 watts of electricity!!! There are 2 small LED bulbs in this night light!

This CF bulb is rather large and puts out about 150-175 watts of light but uses only 45 watts of electricty. This one DOES get hot though so it can not be used in an enclosed fixture, it is suitable for table lamps.
