To ensure that this doesn't happen to you on your vehicle, make sure the double-latching system is functional on your hood. First, make sure the hood pin latches (the pointy looking thing). If it doesn't, the failsafe is the bar/handle you see here in this photo.

This bar/handle should latch onto the spring-loaded hooks behind the grill.

See here how my hooks (barely) wrap over the top of this bar. Ideally, I should fix this so that the bar is bent back even further to ensure that if the hood latch fails, or I don't latch it all the way, that the hooks will fully grab the handle and prevent the hood from flying open in the wind while driving.
