here's a picture of the bottom end of the old engine. i took the oil pan off so i could reuse it on the new engine. there are 2 reasons for this: 1. this oil pan is not beat up like the one that came with the new engine. 2. i want to use the oil pan girdles that came with it. these will help distribute the load across the pan to prevent leaks.

while i was looking inside the engine, i noted that it does have a flat tappet cam. also, the cylinders appear smooth and oily. they look much more oily than the cylinders on the new (used) engine. not sure how oily they are supposed to be but these seem very, very oily.
