I finally found out why it was so hard to start, and had an intermittent miss:
1) both float ball valves were stuck, and
2) the #1 intake valve is stuck, which resulted in this SEVERELY bent pushrod. Turns out, this is due to running modern unleaded...

It's not bent. I guess the old oil just carmelized on the stem enough to jam it.

After only a year & a half, Leo returned the head, with all the paint removed. So I had to wait another week for some mismatched paint to arrive before I could start putting it back together.

This was supposed to be the right color, but it doesn't match the previous paint, which undoubtedly came from the same source.

The valve cover gasket was RightStuff-ed into place a week ago, so it should last forever now.

It took quite a while to get all the valves cold-adjusted. I can't find a timing mark on this engine, and I didn't have the procedure anyway.
