I've had a 3g alternator in my rig for at least 5 years. It's a huge improvement over the fire prone factory 2G and it is a relatively easy swap. 3G alts can be found in T-birds and Tauruses, even Mustangs of similar years with V6. It should be noted that after '92 Ford changed the mounting brackets. The factory 3G came in a 95 amp or a 130. The one on my rig is a 160.

Benefits are more power for accessories and better charging.

The unit I'm running came from the now defunct RJM technologies and uses a 2 5/8 inch pulley and the 8.25 pivot on the alternator casing.

The existing bracket that holds the alternator needs to be clearanced for the 3G, it's pretty evident once you go to install it where the interference is, so a little hit with the grinder and the 3G will slide into place.

wiring for the 3G is much cleaner and is very straightforward. you'll, if you're pulling one off of a J/Y rig just get the entire harness much easier that way.

I got an aftermarket megafuse and bigger cables for mine.
