new rear pro comp 23411 springs 001.jpg | Hits: 1160 | Size: 48.74 KB | Posted on: 1/4/12 | Link to this image

The next 4 pics are just the new springs and a few details sitting unloaded. I intend to use a zero rate 1" lift so these appear to be a bit too much lift. Plan that should take care of this is to remove the overload. This leaves 5 leaves, all arched nicely together, beginning 2 have teflon inserts. I've been running the stock leaf pack with 2 add a leafs to force 3" of lift, plus zero rate, and block. Block goes away with this, and ride should be much nicer. measuring leaf thickness the 5 leaves I'd use are about 5% thicker than stock bronco. So I think this will work out nice.

These days, I'm not after super soft articulating springs for the rear. What I want is nice ride, can still hold some decent load, articulate well on moderate offroad trails, and is about .75" higher in the rear than what I have now.

Also bought new grade 8 bolts and leaf hangers w/ rubber bushings. So I'm going to try the 5 leaf, no overload 23411, with my own steel wedge instead of the aluminum one it came with, plus 1" zero rate.

So this is what is being replaced, stock 17 yr old leafs with rancho dual 3" add a leaf plus 1" zero rate and a solid steel block/wedge. ride wasn't great, didn't like the block, and the AAL's you can see were leaf 2 and 3 from the top, with no diamond cut and no pad, which added to the mediocre ride.

This just shows the current clearance from the exhaust with the suspension near max droop.

This is the roughly 2.25" solid steel block that I removed. Took the dremel metal cutting wheel to the welds to extricate the wedge portion for reuse (vs. using the procomp aluminum wedge).

Initial fit to see how the new leaf would fit and see if I could still use the 1" zero rate offset like I had ( I was able to, it was near exact same).

Next 2 pics you can see the new procomps arch lift vs what I was running. About 2.5" more arch, but of course I'm losing about 1.75" in block. So net apx. 3/4"

With the zero rate I just drilled out the center hole for the leaf pin that goes to the axle spring plate to 9/16ths and used a 9/16ths grade 8 bolt I cut the treads off of, and then was preparing to tack weld the bolt head into the zero so it wouldn't move any (not sure that was needed but I did it anyway).

As it sits after new leafs.

Before, passenger side rear was 43 1/2, driver 43 7/8.
After, passenger is 44 1/4, driver 44 1/4

keep in mind I removed the overload heavy bottom leaf which was apx. 5/8th thick and inserted the 1" zero rate.

It's been several months since I installed the procomps, sans the massive overload, but plus the 1" ORD zero rate. Looks to me like I'd like to add at least a stock leaf, last one before the bottom. This leaf has the teflon pads and looks to match perfectly on the bottom of the procomp 5 leaf pack I have. I'm still kinda waiting since I want to conitinue to watch settling. As it it now, I would just add this 5/16th's thick leaf at the bottom, but only want to make this adjustment once, so if I get more settling, that rusty overload stocker is going back in as well once it's cleaned up. I've had about 3/8ths settling so far, so I suspect a little more, probably end up being 1/2" before it really sets.

next 2 pics are the same, just different lighting. Basically I bought 2 sets of grade 8, 7/16ths fine thread head cap screws/bolts depending on whether I decide to add the one longer leaf or both leafs. I'm almost positive it's going to be both leafs which will increase height 10/16ths without any spring rate, which I think will be minimal to none with weight of bronco on it. So if we add a little spring rate and call it 12/16ths, and then with more settling over the next couple years I can see this being about 9/16ths higher, which would be perfect for what I want.
