The new toy has come home. this is a 1982 27' southwind motorhome. it has a 502 big block and an TH400 tranny and a US Gear underdrive unit
Here is the front end. this is in good shape for its age.
here she is in front of Jezebel. They lost a fan on the way up so i going to do a ford Taruas fan swap.
ok here is the pass side firewall as i got it.
here are the 2 batteries. It is a wiring mess. i going to clean it up as i do the fan swap.
this is the current fan relay the wires are too small and one of the fans burned up.
one more look at the wiring mess. lots of wires going many places.
ok time to get some parts. 1 constant duty relay, 12AWG wire and connectors. the wire tap is fron a full size chevy suburban. this will allow a clean power takeoff.
the relay will handle the high spike turn on the fan produces. the NAPA number is ST88
i used 5/16 tec screws to hold the power tap to the firewall.
i did this swap over two nights so some of the wires were moved and deleted after the next day. this is alot cleaner than the way i got it.
here is the battery after the 1st night. i had to run a temp power to the power tap and i needed the front terminal to complete the circuit. i will get another tap for the ground side soon. this is already looking better.
i had this cable from a 3G alt swap that did not get completed. this is way over kill but the end is $0.50 to swap and a new cable would be $5 so i removed the battery terminal end.
here is the cable with the correct lug end.
here is the tap side of the cable. this will allow anything to be powered here.
here is the battery side after the power tap is installed and jucied up.
ok i decided to install the relay next to the power tap.
one side of the smaller terminals needs to goto a ground.
i went to the battery for the ground. i will get another tap and goto it and clean this side of the battery up too.
the other side of the small terminal goes to a ignition hot powr source. the distributor was swapped for an HEI unit and the old balist was abandoned. i used t for the ignition hot. there does not need to be alot of power for this signal wire just 12v
this temp probe was alread in place and working so i used it to save time.
this is the old fan. one works the other lost its main bearing. the power feed wires are too small. we will fix this.
i upgraded the trigger wire and connector.
here is the old (bottom) and the new fan
here is the other side of the fans.
NAPA called and the fan install kit came in. this is 4 zip ties and i got some connectors for the fan so if i got to swap one out it will be easy.
here is the new fan in place and ready to run.
wel after all the work the new relay was dead. i swapped it out for an older one i had that tested well. i return the other on tomorrow. this fan moves some air. if i want to control it differently i can change the contrpler. it seemed to run well the temp to 1/2 way then it cools to 1/4 way on the guage.
