The small pocket between the column & the hall arch was an obvious spot for a small shelf, but its size & shape made a prefab unit impossible. The one in the corner of the hall is overflowing with DVDs, and a second one just wouldn't look right.

The corner isn't perfectly square; the sides aren't perfectly plumb or flat, & the curve isn't even. Each shelf will have to be fitted to its location.

I'm using solid red oak 1x8" planks with simple notches to mimic the style of the unit that the stereo is on. Right now, there's nothing but their shape holding the pieces together, and only 2 clips to hold the vertical in place.

One of these days, I'll get around to moving that outlet down so it can be used without removing a handfull of DVDs. It's the ideal spot since the entire house can be vacuumed from it.

Since the vertical support was the obvious design, & a natural divider, the otherwise useless curved sections will be curio shelves. My g/f is happy about that...

This is one of my earliest cabinetry projects, so the gaps are larger than I'd like, but I'm still happy with it. It also gave me a good excuse to buy some new Porter Cable tools: a palm sander, cordless router & jigsaw.

2 coats of PolyShades Old Maple & a few more clips, and it's done! The color matches the entertainment center fairly well, and the clock, too.

I didn't even attempt to hide the clips since they're all behind the DVDs anyway. It's strong enough for me to climb.

It's obvious that I collect DVDs, but can you guess what my g/f collects?
