Stone siding to be used outside the fireplace, and as quoins at most of the corners.
|
|
|
Woodburning fireplace with gas lighter will have red herringbone refractory panels, glass doors with platinum frames, and forced fresh air from louvers. There will be fake stone inside; real stone outside; no hearth extension; no TV mount; and the mantle will probably be made locally from cedar that grew on our property.

Master shower will have a glass wall on the Left above the tub (24"), then a 1' wide inoperable panel on the front across from a 3' outswinging door hinged to a 1' wall on the Right. The control, fixed head, and adjustable wand will be on the right, below an accent strip that continues into the niche at the back.

The master bathroom & shower walls (209sqft) will be 18" Italian Carrarra Bianca marble (we bought 120pcs - 270sqft) laid at 45° to the celing in the shower, and 2 tiles high (~51") in the rest of the bathroom. At the height of the shower niche (~53") only inside the shower, there will be an 11.5sqft accent band of Bliss mosaic. The 24sqft shower floor will be the same marble but in a basketweave pattern with black marble dots called Trenza mosaic.
The master bath floor will be gray 12x24" tile that remains to be chosen.
There probably won't be enough marble to do the 61sqft of wall in the toilet stall.

The weather has been reasonably dry for a few days now, so I called a container company & ordered a 40' single-end. It's now tucked out of sight, but where my neighbors can see the doors. My next investments will be padlocks, and a ladder to attach to the inside of the door.

After the road bed was cleared, a trench was dug June 30 for the underground power & gas.

Skelton Electric & Somerville Gas arrived July 1.

When the electrician & gas company left July 1, the trench was packed by a radio-controlled roller, and then grading began.

After the road bed was filled & graded July 9, we cut in the culverts.

Header walls were poured August 14 to protect the driveway entrance and anchor that culvert.

The driveway surface during construction will be chert rock, which was brought in August 26 from a quarry at the Tennessee River.

There's some erosion where this flow meets the ditch, but it appears to be slowing down as it gets to the harder clay.

This was caused by an obstruction on the other side forcing rain to flow across the driveway.

The last floorplan (downstairs only) in DraftSight. There were a few minor changes, but this is essentially what we're building. Turns out we didn't need a 2nd A/C, and the electrical panels ended up in the hall near the master bedroom door. The pull-down attic stairs got moved to the office, and the master toilet will have dual inswinging doors.

The rest of the first floor siding will be brick; everything above will be vinyl (including the chimney), Aluminum (that matches the vinyl), or shingles. There will be virtually no exterior paint.

After I got done burying the 1,000 feet of RG11, I called to get it connected. But they said it was the wrong cable, and again refused to tell me what the RIGHT cable would be. But they did offer to install the right cable for $8,000.
So I snagged a few samples from some passing cable service trucks, and then spent a few months trying to buy it. But no one would sell me just the ~1,000 feet that I needed; only a full ~2,500-foot spool for ~$0.90/ft plus truck freight & dock service. And I'd still have to haul it home, and then get it into the ground.
It took me the better part of a year to find a NOS spool that I could buy closer to $0.80/ft, and it was only ~300-mile-round-trip away! So after a long day on the road, I got home with 430 lbs of CommScope P3-625-JCASS, and put it into my yard trailer on a custom-built rack.

I had to use the zero-turn for the really-rough terrain because it's a heavier & stronger mower. I didn't want to cut a trail wide enough for a truck through the woods. It worked better than I expected, and only got stuck on the steepest section. But it was easy to winch up.

Since I had dug it just a year before with the track-hoe, I was able to use this lighter, cheaper trencher to go back with the bigger cable. And on the flatter ground near the house, the lawn tractor was easier to pull the trailer with.
After I got it buried, I called again to get connected. A couple weeks later, they sent out an installer in a van who obviously couldn't do anything. After a couple of months arguing with them, they finally sent out someone who understood what needed to be done, and then told me it was the wrong cable. But they did offer to install the right cable for $11,000.
After a few more weeks arguing, they decided to try using this cable. About a month later, it still wasn't connected.

This crew is boring under the road to extend their system closer to my cable. But they're not connecting anything - just putting the cable under the road. IDK why they couldn't have strung it overhead.
Still at least 2 more visits before I can have service...

The next crew actually connected all the cable sections to their system, and checked the signal strength outside my house. The last time they told me I put in the wrong cable, they said it was because it wouldn't carry the signal well enough over that distance, and that P3-875-JCASS was necessary. This meter indicates I have at least 4x the necessary signal strength; about 3x better than most houses near the pavement.
But I'm still at least 1 more visit away from service, and that's going to be about 2 weeks.
