I notice in the repair manual that the automatic transmission requires Mercon, not Mercon V or Mercon/Mercon V. There is even a caution note stating this. In preparing for a transmission fluid and filter change, I find out that Mercon is no longer made and that Fords service bulitin ows says Mercon V is OK to use. What's with the contradiction? It's OK just because Mercon is no longer manufactured??
Any thoughts?

MERCON V was reformulated to work in transmissions that required MERCON. You're fine although I still wouldn't mix the two. If you change to V then make sure you drain the tranny sufficiently.
