a bondo'd over hole started leaking water inside
maybe it was for a CB antenna
Rubber Duck ya got yer ears on?
Bandit? Snowman?
duck tape patch kept the water out for a while
or so I thought, it kept getting wet inside
maybe i shoulda put a bigger patch on it?
saving the edges is gonna be hard enough
so lets just get rid of the middle part
the cut-off wheel doesn't turn so good
after grinding some, the pitted areas started crumbling through
lets not kid ourselves, there's only enough metal left to make a strainer
so i decided to cut the skin off
ugly is to the bone
this thing's gonna be a convertible pretty soon
this must be what the old roof looked like 20 years ago, looks like the same exact spots
i made a template to locate the same points on both roofs. i started with the widest opening at the bed rails, then trimmed it down to fit in the window opening, then the side window.
pretty committed at this point
i left some allowance metal to form another factory style lap joint below the one on the new roof because the allowances on the old quarters are rusted off

first test fit of the new roof, not too bad at all
drivers side A pillar, hose clamps are holding a piece of plastic tubing for safety
the 72 didn't get the same shoulder belt mount that later years did, in the rear corner of the roof

i wonder if i dodged a bullet by not trying to rebuild the inner structure, these reinforcements might not be the only changes?
there's nothing there in the 72 roof
offsetting both edges created a new recessed seam to weld in and mud over
