2.jpg the crosspin retaining bolt was still in but the crosspin itself clearly broke through it somehow. its common for the retaining bolt to break but it would have to break twice in the perfect locations for it to allow the pin the slide out. 

a couple months ago i had jsut replaced the spider gears and crosspin due to the spiders wearing the pin badly. the retaining bolt was broken and still held the pin

the pin is actually snapped in half and the end of this hit the pinion gear causing the lock up.
