Hi,

I'm new to the board, but have lusted for an X for some time now. Have an opportunity to buy a 2000 XLT, 4x4, 7.3 PSD, in nice, clean condition. Only problem is it has 250,000 miles. I found another with 160,000 miles, but is $4,000 more. (I can get the first for around $12,500 - private seller)

Am I crazy to consider a rig with this many miles? What can I expect will be wrong with engine & drive train, and/or other? In other words, what should I be looking for that will cause me grief down the road?

Thanks & take care,
Hawkeye

Mark,Welcome to the Ford Excursion Forums

Sounds like a great deal as long as it's running well, clean, complete and so on.

The 250k on the engine/tranny would say to have a $10k kitty saved up for a new/rebuilt engine/tranny but that's my .02 cent opinion

Whatever owner usage/repair history you can get on the X might give a little bit of bargaining on the end $.

And it's Friday already! Happy Friday!

Wow.... 250k is a LOT of miles. Even if $12,500 is a steal, it won't matter if you're stuck on the side of the road. I would never consider a truck with that many miles... even if it IS a Diesel!
I would look at the 160k mile Excursion, and try to work them down a little.
Just remember this... there's ALWAYS another deal that you'll find tomorrow. That's a lesson I learned the hard way... after impulsively buying TOO many vehicles thinking they were the BEST and ONLY deal I could find.
There's always another good deal to be found.
Good luck, and welcome to the forum.

For the 12k I'd go over it with a fine toothed comb and would even have a friend from a body/truck shop give it a close look over/near tear down, awful low price but I'd really look closely at it before thinking about the money.

with good maintenance Ive heared the 7.3's going into the 500K zone, my friends that use the F350 to haul trailers and do over the road hot shot say that the motor is still in great shape with 350K on it, but the tranny is where I would be concerned, I have friends that have gone through several trannys and are still on the same first engine, have the truck looked at VERY close. Like ^^ said, if you get this beast for 12.5 K and spend 10K more to replace motor and tranny, you would have been better off with a 20K lower milage truck,, godd luck and welcome to the EX world!!

Hi Mark and welcome to the site!

Kelley Blue Book would suggest that a "private party value" is $17,175 if it is in Excellent condition with 250,000 miles.

$12,500, in theory, is a very good deal. As far as whether to buy a vehicle with 250k on it, I would personally consider this on the tail end of its life (engine-wise). I assume the tranny has been rebuilt at some point in its 250k miles. That's a lot of miles for anything on a vehicle...what kinds of receipts does the owner have from previous repairs?

160k miles for $4k more I would say is a fine deal. I have 130k on my 2000 PSD X and it is in fine shape. I had a rebuilt trans installed at 87k, but no problems whatsoever with the engine. No oil leaks or oil burning issues even at 130k. I'm still considerably upsidedown on my loan for this thing, so I plan on having it for at least 300k miles.

250k miles in 4 years...WOW. That's a lot of driving! I tip my hat to whoever accomplished that feat.

Good Morning all you X drivers,

Thanks for the great & helpful input, really made me think about this one. I looked at it yesterday, will have the local Ford dealer do an inspection on Monday. I took along a friend who is a certified auto mechanic to help check it out. Here's what we found:

*Started right up after sitting 3 days with overnight lows in the high teens - very little smoke when cold

*Everything works - windows, locks, seats, rear vents, stereo, signals, etc. A dash light is out at tach/gear indicator.

*All glass is good, one slight chip in windshield center at rear view mirror level.

*Interior is clean, no spots on carpeting, seats. Diver seat has small hole, looks like a burn.

*Dash section in front of driver looks like it's been removed, not reinstalled properly. Top lip has a bow in it, looks like they missed a connector/fitting. Will have Ford determine what;s up here.

*Steering is tight - it actually steers as well, maybe better than a new '04 Diesel I drove last month.

*Front tires are nearly new Bridgestone, rears are about 50%.

*Engine runs strong but noisy - typical for 7.3 I guess.

*Underside is dry, differentials, transmission, engine. Nothing dripping or leaking.

*Transmission shifts tight & hard 1st-2nd, 3rd-4th, & 4th-OD. 2nd -3rd is kinda soft unless full throttle. Fluid is red, not burned.

*Brakes are good, pedal high & hard. Stops are not straight, pulls to the drivers side. Also has brake pulsation (probably warped rotor) at high speed, not noticeable at 30mph or less.

*Front suspension has a 'clunking' sound over washboard road or bumps coming from drivers side. Something is loose or broken (spring mount? ball joint? sway bar bush?), probably whats causing the brake pull.

*When vehicle was cold & put in Drive, then applied brakes, it felt like something disengaged at trans or diff. I let off brake, crept forward 4-5 feet, then braked again, same thing. It never happened again, but made me nervous. Trans going? Axles? Differential? Normal?

*Paint is good, no rust except at bottom of both front wheel well-fender. Tiny rust spots on roof (2-3), same at bottom of passernger door.

*Hood has couple long scratches that can be buffed, one short but deep that would need a bug deflector to cover., Same at both rear roof corners, several deeper (through the paint). Rear cargo doors have several slight scratches, one deep.

*Roof over front seats has 2-3 creases and is heavily scratched. Some can be buffed out, creases would have to be pulled or dentless/hail damage method might work. You can't see it from the ground, have to climb up on the running boards to see.

*Right side of front bumper has been pounded out from a hit, looks like fender is slightly sprung, but does not interfere with door, window, etc.

Truck was at a consignment lot, he let me drive it home (60 miles) so I can have it inspected. Rode good, handled & braked well, 75-80 mph all the way. Looks like fuel economy was about 15-16? Can't tell for sure, may have been more. I'll talk with owner on Monday, he bought it new from Superior Motors in Plymouth, MN - the window sticker was $44k.

IF (big if) everthing else is OK, I'm looking at a couple of tires, some kind of broken shackle/attachment/ball joint replacement, pair of rotors, some detailing that I can do myself, dash R&R for lights. Body work is optional. Then all fluid changes & alignment. I'd set aside 2-3k for any future surgery, & go.

Haven't bought it yet, but I'm mighty tempted. Lotta truck for the money, cosmetics don't bother me much. I'd be driving 15 minutes to work every day, but several hunting/recreation trips to Montana (2000 mi round trip) every year, and to Northern Minnesota. Would put 15-20k miles/yr on it.

I took some pics I'll post as soon as I set up 'my garage'. I haven't looked at the other, lower (160k, $16-17k price) mileage one yet, but will at lunch tomorrow.

So, what do you guys think?

Mark,

It looks like you've done some good research. With regards to:

*When vehicle was cold & put in Drive, then applied brakes, it felt like something disengaged at trans or diff. I let off brake, crept forward 4-5 feet, then braked again, same thing. It never happened again, but made me nervous. Trans going? Axles? Differential? Normal?

Maybe a torque converter issue? Definitely get any background on the transmission you can...outside of just having a mechanic look at it. It will be interesting to find out how many miles are on the trans and whether or not it's ever been rebuilt.

Let us know how the X with 160k on it handles after your test drive.

You're almost there!

1) *Brakes are good, pedal high & hard. Stops are not straight, pulls to the drivers side. Also has brake pulsation (probably warped rotor) at high speed, not noticeable at 30mph or less

This is normal. my new ex does that too. its the mud and dirt in the rotors. and the pulsing might be from that anti-lock.

2) *Front suspension has a 'clunking' sound over washboard road or bumps coming from drivers side. Something is loose or broken (spring mount? ball joint? sway bar bush?), probably whats causing the brake pull.

this is also normal, we have been trying to figure this one out for awile, some get it others dont, I have not heard this yet.

3) as for the top, there are luggage crossover bars that ride on the paint, you have to remove these as soon as you buy the truck, or the damn things wear through the paint and cause rust,.

sounds like a winner, congrats and welcome to the elite club of XUV owners!!
