Maintenance & Modification Logs

10/15/04Maintenance107.5Timing chain/ignition module
Since I'm up to ass in alligators, when my EB died in my driveway (wouldn't fire) my genius "mechanic" brother tells me it's the timing chain.... he never checked the spark.

Imagine his surprise when he installed the chain, hit the key.... and nothing happened.

It was the module.

Well, new timing chain/gears at 107K isn't entirely a bad thing... but all the pieces and paying him for gas set me back $260... which sucked.

09/08/04Maintenance106.5Save the paint?
Waxed the rig today... the paint is fairly thin, and it hadn't been waxed in a long time (years, at least) but I noticed that each time I waxed it, more and more of the paint seemed to "come back." Waxed the worst visible area, (The hood) three times, and it looks MUCH better. The roof is next, but I need to take the soft top off to do it right.

Then I vacuumed most of it out, and got rid of the stock floor mats in the front.

Now I'm thinking about pulling the console and locating the boom box in between the seats.

08/20/04Modification106.2Trans cooler, remote trans fluid filter
OK... Put in a 17K B&M Trans Fluid Cooler and a remote trans fluid filter. Not a LOT of room behind the grill in front of the AC condenser, so I zip-tied it to the back of the grill... hardly noticable.

I only hope I've got the flow direction right for the oil filter mount.

07/11/04Maintenance105.6Trans Filter
Replaced the Trans filter... probably didn't need to, as it was pretty clear that it had been replaced once before... knowing the woman I bought it from, it was probably at the 60K mark like the book says.

MAN, that was a filthy job.... made much easier by the lift. Took a bunch of pictures, the lift kit included springs as opposed to blocks in the rear. Everything looked pretty good under the Bronco, few signs of leaks. Took 7.5 quarts of atf. Since the trans is an EAOD unit, the filter cost 30 damned dollars.

07/09/04Modification105.5Swap CD deck in
Swaped in the Alpine CD deck from my z28. Swaped a full height Jensen into the Z. I believe the deck has a problem... it doesn't keep stations in memory. Didn't do it in the Z, either.

Anyway, the EB has gone from a stock radio with 2 wasted front speakers to a four speaker Alpine CD deck setup.

07/06/04Maintenance105.5Seafoam
Seafoamed the crap out of everything. I/2 can in the oil; 1/2 can sucked into intake; can in autotrans prepatory to swaping trans filter, can into gas tank. Will be getting remote mount for oil and cooler.

07/04/04Modification105Speakers
Bought 4 stock replacement Pioneer speakers... feel like an idiot because I modified the grill on one of the speakers in an effort to fit 6X9 Jensens that will not fit with the "speaker frames" in the stock locations.

So, now, one speaker grill has a large hole in the center opposite the tweeters,

Bought boom box with 2 JBL drivers, 300 watt amp, alpine grapic equalizer

07/02/04Maintenance105.5Soft Top work
More adjustments for the soft top... moved rear snaps forward 1/2 inch... shifted snaps on the side towards the rear.

Still need to get the zipper fixed on the D/S.

06/28/04Modification105Installed soft top
I put up the soft top I picked up from eBay. I was stunned to find out it was brown, when I thought for sure, based on the picture, that it was black.

It wasn't hard to do... though my lack of experience was an issue (this was my first soft top install) I took the top off by myself, which was easier than I thought it might be.

The instructions aren't written all that well, and placement of the hardware is critical.

I will have to adjust the positions of the aluminum strips with the snaps... the snap locations are a little too far apart for the zippers to zip all the way down to the bottom... and I had to move the two pivot points (bolted in too far forward) where the bows connect to the sides (otherwise, the butt end sags.)... there also is a problem with one of the two zippers... but I imagine that can be fixed at one of the boat top places around here.

I spent 40 bucks on hardware... but only needed about 10$ worth for the install.

06/23/04Repair105P/S Door lock mechanism
P/S door lock solenoid inop. Took door apart... could they have done a more screwed up job of access to that solenoid?

I'll be replacing it... if I can figure out how to get it out. But I've at least figured out how to lock... and unlock... the P/S door.

06/23/04Modification105Add gage and copper line.
When I bought this rig, it was from Stephanie, who thought the oil pressure was gone: ""90 Eddie Bauer Fullsize Bronco, 105K, 4" lift, 35" tires. Red & Tan. 351 EFI, AOD, manual hubs and 4x selector shift on the floor. Power everything: windows, door locks... AC needs recharge. New battery, recent brake job, alignment, muffler, starter, solenoid, well-maintained...Very nice shape. Has oil but low oil pressure. Already replaced the sending unit so I think it's a clogged oil pump. I have too many projects already! This could be a great rig for someone who doesn't mind doing a little work to get it running again (it runs now, I just wouldn't drive it without oil pressure). Otherwise it's in excellent shape. Located in Battle Ground, WA. No reasonable offer refused!"

I went out and looked at it... she fired it up, and it was pretty clear that it didn't have an oil pressure problem... it has a gage problem.

I told her this... the engine wasn't making any sound it shouldn't have made... fired right up cold. I told her that it was worth a lot more fully functional then with an oil pressure problem... but I was also sure that it didn't HAVE an oil pressure problem. I told her that I wanted the rig, but I couldn't afford it at the good running price (I was thinking maybe $4500) She asked me what it was worth with the oil pressure problem... and I told her that if the problem WAS oil pressure... it might be worth 1500 to 1750. She asked me if I would buy it at $1750... and I said "Hell, yes!"

Done!

So, I drove it home, oil pressure gage fluctuating occasionally... running like a clock... tomorrow, I'm slamming in a set of manual gages just in case.

Bronco life is good.

This rig is so good, I'm gonna sell my 95 XL... and keep this one, since it's got the lift, the 35's and a much better interior than my federal Bronc."
