Hey guys I have a 2004 x 6.0 liter diesel and when I let it idle it goes into a high rpm idle. Doesn't matter if its been warm or cold, after a couple minutes it jumps up. When I touch the brake or gas it goes back down. This has only started since this winter. Scratchin my head in Michigan!

This is normal -- it's the EBV (Exhaust Backpressure Valve) closing which causes the high idle you're experiencing. This happens in colder temperatures which enables the engine to warm up faster. Hitting the brake will open the EBV back up.
After a certain period of idling without using the brake, it will close again until the engine hits normal operating temperature. You'll also hear a bit of a "whooshing" sound from the tailpipe when the EBV is closed. This sound is pronounced if you have an aftermarket exhaust system. An example of this sound can be heard here on my X in this video (when I had the Hypermax 5" exhaust): http://www.supermotors.net/clubs/fordexcursions/registry/media/108676
(on edit: Sorry, that's Exhaust Backpressure Valve, not Exhaust Brake Valve)
Hey Eric, good info. I just noticed this on my '02 PSD the other day and was wondering if it was something I did since I only noticed it after I changed the fuel filter.
Good info, thanks!
