hey im most of the way through converting my 1990 eddie bauer bronco froma 351w to a 460, i expect it will be trail ready by oct 1, but before i am going to take it on the trail i have to work out the bugs in it, my big concern is the front end, itws the old standard dana44 ifs, will coils from a f-350 work under it ? will i have to modify the perch's ? and if there is anyone local, do you have a straight axle dana 44 for sale
thanks
tom

Tom, if you know the difference in weight between the 351 & 460, I suggest you just get new front springs with the proper spring rate for the difference ... well sorta....
IE, if you have a 2" lift and the new motor weighs 400lbs more (total guess) look for some springs that are close to 400lb/inch and meant for 1 inch more lift. That should give you the same height you have now....
This page may be helpful to you....
http://www.patricksnorton.com/bronco/lifttech.html
Looking at that page, lets say you have the 2" superlift springs, they are rated at 400lb/inch. If the new motor weighs 400 more pounds you'd want spring for a 3" lift that are rated at 400lb/inch or so to be level. To be safe I'd say go with (for this example only I don't know what the weight difference is) the Superlift 4" springs .... you can always easily add 1" to the rear.... and the higher spring weigh would be better for the heavier engine.
hope this helps...

Engine Weight
289-302 460lbs
302Boss 500lbs
351W 525lbs
351C 550lbs
351M-400 575lbs
460 720lbs
so the weight difference between the windsor and 460 would be 195lbs (or so says the internet)
hope this helps

thanks for all the info on the springs. had a question about the weights of the engine though, do you know if those weights are the complete engine and accesories or just the actual long block ? i'm still not sure about the ifs though, it is extremly difficult to work on compared to a straight axle and the parts are alot cheaper. has anyone converted a ifs ford to a straight axle ? if so is it difficult. all the advice you can give would definetly be appreciated.
thanks tom |
