It was his front.. I removed the axle shafts and he will be fine driving home.. But he is 2 wheeling the rest of the weekend...

He did make a good showing on the hill and on the Bowl ( until the break..)
On the good side its a brand new part ...So might be under warranty..

well, turns out we needed the outters on those axle shafts....

Patrick did a brake check doing 25 and the front right side flopped off, be bounced across the asphalt a few times and came to a stop with a broken knucle on that side....very little compared to what it could have been...we searched a few hours for a tow truck, then ran into teh guys from B.R. with "The Bus" so we made it home safe, i think we rolled into B.R. 11:30ish last night and I didnt finish unloading my camper in lafayette until almost 2....

Patrick has a few tricks up his sleeve and may be rolling as early as tomorrow...

Holy Crap

That sucks... DId they give you a ride back in the bus. Or what??
MAn that sucks.. Maybe we should have pulled the R&P instead...

I have never heard of having problems from removing the shafts.. Just doesnt seem right,,
I mean its not like the rear where the C clip holds the axle in they only slide in and are bolted to the hub.. You wouldnt think there would be any support on the hub..
Did you get pics??

Post up.

no problem pulling the shafts, you need to leave the outters in as that nut is what acts as a spindle for the rotor to ride on...the wheel broke away with rotor caliper and line all still attached, broke at the knuckle and slammed down...from everyone following him I hear it was a scary site as the back end of the truck was visible over the roof of Jeff who was directly behind him....patrick has pics....might be awhile before we see much of anything, he's bummed....

Yeah he trailered home behind the bus... and rode in it...did fine... it WILL be a interesting write up...

Interesting to say the least

Not too bummed, I was actually just happy to be alive ... but upset with the situation that had developed as a result of me not being able to get in touch with Piper.

What happened:
Since I had messed up my brake line on the bowl & the brakes felt a little squishy I decided to do a light brake check going about 45 right outside the park.... told Jeff to give me some room and I hit the brakes. Slowed me down to about 35 then BOOM! Bounced 3 times and finally came to a halt. At first (while it was happening) I though that I had just run off the road, then I realized my rear hadn't done the same thing. Next (while it was happening) I thougt my driveshaft had broken and pole vaulted me up.When I finally stopped I realized I had at least lost a tire, but that would have been nothing.
The hub had split apart (without the shaft to hold it together apparently it splits up) on the passenger side leaving only the caliper to hold the tire on. Well the tabs that hold the caliper on (as well as the chunks the caliper slides on) just snapped tossing the tire and ripping the brake line. So with no brakes & not even a rotor to roll on the castle nut on the lower balljoint dug in and stopped me.... a few feet from going into the ditch.
We sent Josh, Jessica, Kris & Yomie to go find a trailer & new hub. While Jeff & I were waiting, we found the pieces of the hub, beat it back together and slapped it on with the shaft installed. The hub on the other side had started to come apart so the drivers knuckle is probably messed up where the caliper mounts as well.
We ended up seeing Eric, Russ & Mike with the school bus/trailer setup and they helped us get it on a trailer and back to my house (I owe them big time). That bus is the greatest idea ever by the way...

Had this happened on the interstate, both tires would had come off and I would have flipped right onto the roof or done a few barrel rolls. Probably wouldn't be typing right now.

Anyway, still alive, so now I need to get it all back together so I can get around town.

Carl gonna need to borrow the knuckles off your old d30. That and some brake lines & calipers should get me back on the road ... assuming the inner knuckle is OK (took a pretty hard hit on the asphalt). If the inner is messed up as well I might pull a 2wd front end off a junker and slap it on till I can buy a "real" front end....coughrubicon44cough.

I'll try to get some pics and some video up as soon as I can but it will probably be a few days before I have the full write up online.

Anybody with pics be sure to email them to me so I can get the whole trip up at once

Thanks to everyone that helped me, both times, I owe all you guys big time .....

Next purchase:
Front axle that doesn't suck

Second purchase:
Full cage in case the new axle still sucks

That sounds like quite an adventure Hope it turns out well for ya. I wouldn't go with a rubicon 44 for your next axle, though. The R&P is not much stronger than the RC Dana 30 and uses the same outers. IF you're going to spend big, I would talk to Lee. He knows too damn much about axles.....he's a freak I tell ya.

Glad to hear you made it home in tact and alive. That bus is the mofro.

Later
