Help......... I recently purchased a set of tires from a guy I work with. The tires are 39 X 15 X 16.5 mounted on 8 hole wheels. Yes they are the ones I'm trying to sell in the For Sale forum. I don't however want to sell them. I think they would look great under my 84 Bronco. Problem is the wheels. Since they are 8 lug and the Bronco is 5 lug I gots a problem. A few places have told me that they don't make 16.5 rims in a 5 hole. Is this true? If so I was told about wheel adapters. This idea does'nt set well with me. Will I break axles with these tires or are wheel adapters even safe or legal for state inspections? A truck accessory store said to call Eaton and have wheels custom made. But like everybody I'm on a budget and that sounds expensive.
Does anyone have any suggestions or advice? Thanks all. |

Don't know where you are located. I found a set of 5 lug, 8.25X 16.5 at a Tire Store called Les Schwab. These type od wheels are not that uncommon.

I know a dude in San Antonio, TX that found some 5-lug 16.5" wheel for his Bronco for about $80 each!!! He told me that he got'em from the local Discount Tire store (special order, took about 6 months) but they're the same Monster Wheels that are in the ads in all of the 4WD mags. They look awesome!!! My problem with those is that you can't air them down very much for running in sand, cause there's no safety bead on 16.5's. They're O.K. if you have a "poser" or street truck, though!
If you had an adapter that bolted to the 5-lugs on the rotors/hubs and had a way to mount an 8-lug wheel, I don't think it would hold up too well. A 37x12.50 tire and wheel weighs a good 200 pounds, so that's alot of strain on the lug bolts and nuts. Some guys have converted their rotors/hubs to 8 lug so that they can mount those wheels. I would go with a 16- or 17-inch wheel size then. |
