Yes I plan on staying in college but yet I see SO many people do well or make their break or struggle but turn out just as well sometimes better than people with college degrees. I often debated out of high school about even going to college vs a tech school and straight into the workforce, however since 9-11 and the slope in the economy I see a better reason to goto college. The prevelent scene through all of this to me is that its still all about who you know. I am concerned alone with getting a degree in something I like, but just having a degree and then doing whatever job suits me, pertaining to my degree or not. What are ya'lls experiences and advice if any about why to get a degree and wisdom one might offer. I often get frustrated with school, being on a survey crew for a summer with a 45 yr old man who was making 8$ an hour inspired me a bit, but I tend to loose focus. Whats your experience?

well i never finished college but i wish i had because with some of the jobs ive had i can tell you its not what you know or who you know its a mutha freaking piece of paper with your name on it

example i worked at a place called mediq/prn for 3years started out as a driver starting pay for this position was 18k a year now at this office there are only 4 positions driver, manager, biomed, and ino specalist, all of these positions required a college degree except driver after being there a few months they hired a new biomed, nice guy, straight out of college also went to tech school for electronics, this guy didnt know shit, i usually fixed or had to help him fix all of his equipment yet he was making about 6k more a year than me as his base pay, then about a year later i got moved to night shift and as part of doing this i was asked to handel the INO part of the job also but because i didnt have a degree they would not give me a title and they only bumped my pay to the federal mandate to work third shift even though this position started at 32k i was now making about 23k then about a year after that i finaly got a promotion with a title to work out side the office at a hospital but because i didnt have a degree i didnt get a raise so my point is just because you can do the job doesent mean shit to your employers they want that little piece of paper i have a few more examples but ill cut it short

and lastly my mom has worked for the strategic patroleum reserve for 20 years now and about 6or 7 years ago she finished college and even though she stayed at the same position in her job they just automatically gave her a 7k raise because the payscale was different for college graduates

Well, having spent more time in college than most people, I understand your frustration. I have gotten pretty sick of the busy work crap you have to do and mostly of the fact that even when you leave class, it's not over (homework/projects/labs/ets). But I also think that this is because I never could find any major that interested me. I've had jobs that interested me, and I've seen others doing jobs that I was interested in, but often these jobs don't have any set degree you have to have to get them. You just have to have a degree.

I'm looking for jobs right now since I'll be finishing school in December, and it's already hard enough to find something I can do. Subtract the jobs that require a college degree & the jobs that won't provide me with enough income for my future & opportunities to move up .... there isn't much left.

A lot of life IS who you know. And this varies from field to field, but you also have to be "qualified" and unfortunately lots of places require a degree as qualification. Sure there are a lot of people out there that will make it without a degree, but a lot of them grew up in a different time, and there are even more of those folks that didn't acheive what you might think of as success.

If you are still young, you can afford to put some time toward college & live off ramen noodles & ravioli for now. Get your education cause if you quit it's hard as hell to go back....

So lets see, I can frame and roof and build structures, and electrical, carl and build cabinets and you can do plumbing.....hum....Looks like the man house could happen under our own power, after building a bullet proof shed 8x12, framed with 16" spaced studs, boarded, doored, roofed and shingles at home with a $800 budget and seeing some of less workman ship go for around 3000 all day long I am a firm believer I will one day build my own house at near cost, atleast the "man house", for those that haven't heard if I get a job with my degree and make the mucho dinero they make, I will build a smaller house on the same acrage i dream of with a 3 bay garage, shower, trough pisser, and all for the men to visit and WOT and crash whenever

Yall are too funny with that, .....Josh , if it were me I would tough it out and get the degree.
I had a similar choice to make back in 1982. My high school buddies friend next door was a rig medic for Zapata Off-Shore Co. He went to work right out of high school on a Semi Submersible. He was gone for a good while and when he got back he was rolling in the dough, new car etc etc. So I said damn, making the big bucks, if he can do it I can do it.My friends dad got me an appt. with the employee recruiter in Houston TX.I went down there and took test ,watched video, etc etc. reminded me of the movie URBAN COWBOY since I was driving my Dodge 4x4 into Houston. Well after that it took 3 long months of me calling them every week....I was about to give up and go to Tech school for AG Mechanics when they called. Now I had to make a decision, do I go Off-Shore or do I go to school.I chose to go Off-Shore. Money was pretty good, started out as chipper painter, worked up to Roustabout, stayed as Roustabout for about 2 years then moved up to Rig Floor as Roughneck.Stayed a Roughneck for 2 1/2 years , learned a lot from my Driller, even learned to work Derricks.Thought I might be a driller one day. Then the oil prices started going south, Rigs stacking up, other workers from Zapatas other rigs were coming over to our platform rig because we had a longterm contract to drill 21 wells.Well in July of 87 ,it all came to an end. I didn,t know what to do with myself, found myself working at a car wash for $4.00 and hour....I was used to pulling in good money $30K range.Oilfield experience is only good in the oilfield, thats why its OJT ( On the Job Training ) in the oil patch. After that happened I was back to square one, seemed like starting all over again. Now I will say this, some people dont need college but most who don,t usually start there own business so they don,t have to answer to no one but themselves.
I would stay in , tough it out, get the degree.

Like a teacher said in Vo Tech school, the people with the college get the easier ,cleaner jobs.No college degree , you will get the bottom of the barrell stuff that nobody wants to do.
OK I am done now,
