Just bought my first bronco - an old 82 that needs a little work. One thing that it didn't come with is a spare tire holder --- if i'm not mistaken i think they stuck the original spare underneath. But right now it has some 32's on it so i doubt those would fit under there. So it basically boils down to two options, put it on a swing out mount on the back -- like the late 70's or a mount on the front. Is my best bet for one of the swing out mounts to just go to a junk yard and try to stick it on there? And does anybody know of any body that makes decent front spare mounts?? any input would be appreciated
thanx

The fs Broncos never had the spare underneath. Either interior behind the rear seat, pass side, or exterior swing out mounted on the rear pass side.
Retrofitting an exterior carrier is not as easy as you might think. These place a lot of load (weight) on the body/quarter panel, so Ford used backing plates on models that got the exterior carrier from the factory. You'd have to transfer these backing plates over, which is not as easy as it sounds. I don't know anyone who has successfully done it, but then again I don't know anyone who has tried once they figured out what would be involved. You could try to make your own backing plates with some plate steel, and they'd probably hold up so long as you don't exceed a spare tire of say 31" (guessing)
The ideal setup is to hinge an exterior carrier off a custom rear bumper, thus removing all the load from the body and transfering it to the frame where it belongs. |

Thanx for the input
I'd want a fullsize spare (32) .. so odds are i'd probably end up ripping my quarter panel off I guess it's time to whip out the welder. |

Yep, that is the best solution. Especially if your tailgate is still unmarked.
