So now that the '92 Bronco is dead and gone, it is time to look for a replacement. I was leaning toward the 351 because I had the 302 and felt that it was a bit under powered. But, what difference is there in gas milage between the two engines? I had a K&N, MSD ignition and a cat back with 3.55 gears in the '92 and on a good day, I was able to get 15mpg on the highway. After 7" of lift and 35's, that droped to about 11-12mpg. So the question is, does the extra power of the 351 make up for the loss in gas milage, if any? |

The 351's biggest difference is in the torque. It has a longer stroke than the 302 and that's about it. By adding a cam and exhaust along with a MSD ignition the "get out of the hole" low-end performance can be greatly improved over the 302.

Holy crap, 7-10mpg? That is just plain unacceptable with anyting under 400hp. Is that really the milage that you get? |

On 16 gallons of gas(about half a tank) I can squeeze about 180 miles outta my 351. Course this is with an un-rebuilt motor with 175,xxx miles on it. I don't really baby the throttle. This also includes 10 minute warm-ups during the day going to and from school and work. About half of the miles are city driven and half are highway driven.
I find these to be pretty respectable numbers given the fact that the broncos are shaped like a brick and have fairly high gear ratios, I have the stock 4.11's( at least im pretty sure they're 4.11's). Also, automatics tend to get worse gas mileage then manuals, and since i have yet to see a 351 powered bronco with a manual, i assume that they all came with the E4OD autos( the early and later 90's). I dont mind the mileage at all, Ive had to pull my friends 91 F-150 with the 302 w/a 4 speed manual w/granny gear out tons of times, and after sticking it in 4 low, the bronco just pulls it out without a fuss. |
