i know most of you have heard the shrill squeel coming from my starter but its starting to drive me nuts ive already got a new flywheel in there and a new starter that took quite a bit of shiming to get right but it still grinds every once in a while, now i know that a small block chevy only stops in three places so it seems to be just one of these spots that does this anyone have any ideas how to remidy the situation

The starter may have a bad bendix in it, the one way clutch inside is not grabbing, its slipping.Where did you get the starter from ?

Kris, it could be that your flexplate is cracked??? Have you checked it completely??? Even if it is new, your crank might have a little wobble and it could cause the flexplate to crack or shift a little throwing off the allignment of the starter. I think that is what happened to mine. Just a thought
