So I purchased a th400 with np205 combo off of e-bay, it was buffalo NY so I expected it to have some road grime and a little surface rust. I went ahead and purchased it seeing in the pictures it didnt look all that bad.
A little oily a little rusty overall not too bad, easily cleanable, so I start devising this plan to get this t-case into my truck by redcreek order custom shafts and have them shipped etc etc. So the case is shipped saturday feb 7th expected to arrive wed to thursday last week, nothin, no calls no nothin, friday, nothing, they are closed sat and sunday at forward air so I arrive monday knowing its there according to the website and tracking number and its not! I'm becoming concerned as I spent a large chunk of change on this thing muchless shipping, start to think about it and wonder if the seller somehow despite all my e-mails saying ship to B.R. here is my B.R. address etc etc, found my e-bay home address of lafayette and had it shipped there, well low and behold there is a B.R. Cargo in lafayette that deals with forward air too and they have it!! So I ask about getting it shipped or forwarded on to B.R. as with work and school I have no time to make a trip just to get this thing, I made a few calls and agreed for $28 or whatever they would fwd it to B.R. for yesterday afternoon, so its been well over a week. This morning I make my way across town to pick it up and get there and the guy is like I'm like .....he still doesnt have it, he calls lafayette and determines its enroute to N.O. terminal but the truck is actually at his loading dock and hadn't left yet, so I got it today by some crazy luck before it disappeared into the cargo abyss and reappeared on e-bay......upon getting it home and further inspection the rust is pretty bad and the fawkers used a cutting torch and fawked a few things up....
Notice in the pic above the speedo sensor is rusted out
thats supposed to be a mount for a 5/8" bolt to go through
why dont we just torch the frame so the crossmember is still bolted to something
I'm a bit pissed but think with time (that I dont have) and some TLC i can get this straight and clean, FWDAIR didnt charge me a fee for the fwd from Lafayette to Baton Rouge And atleast I now have a 205 for the fire-starter

son of a motherless goat.... that shit is rusted.
not just any rust..
nasty, flaky, dirty, horrible rust.
that thing looks like they cut it off of the titanic. i hate to be a nay-sayer, but good luck getting any of those bolts out.. they look like therye fused to the case.
i mean look at this pic:
it looks like those bolt heads are almost gone.
in my experience, when metal is so rusted, that is flaking like that.. bad news.
people on ebay suck.

I sent a message today:
| Quote: | Ms. Wier:
I am writting you to let you know I did indeed recieve the transmission and transfer case I purchased from e-bay. I am however very disappointed in the product I recieved. The rust alone has made many of the purchased parts unusable. This was not apparent at all through the listing or pictures. At best I will be purchasing another transfer case housing to swap these internals into--I have not looked inside the transfer case yet. All bolts in this entire setup are rusted very very badly. Given this condition I may have paid half the ending auction price.
If the rust was not enough alone the excessive use of a cutting torch around many of the main components has ruined them. Many of the mounting holes are damaged, and lots of slag from the melted metal has welded surfaces together. I feel like I have been taken by this auction, a large amount of my money has been invested and at best I would consider the condition of this setup fair. I am seeking atleast some sort of refund for this item. I feel that a refund of my shipping cost would partially correct this situation. If you would like to see more pictures in detail of what I am talking about I have lots of them. I look forward to hearing back from you.
Best regards,
Joshua Tekell |
We'll see what happens from there, the auction does say

got it apart, and the fluid is still clean, non-burnt smelling, came from a running truck and this kinda backs that
notice the HD stamped on it makes it a more valuable case, i forget what they did to the HD's to make them stronger but definately worth more

| Quote: | Feb 2/20
this unit came out of a truck that ran and drove.if you could send me some
pics showning me why it cant be used i will look them over and make a
decision . the only thing i cut with a torch was the frame above the
crossmember.these setups are getting really hard to find espically the bolt
on rear yoke np-205;s.i would like to keep all my customers happy.i will do
must best to make a fear decision when you send me some pics.

so then I wrote back:
Feb 20
I understand the rarity of these setups which is why I paid so much for this particular one...In actuality this particular setup is the RAREST of them. Swapping the guts alone to another case which if not identical will be costly as the machining that will need to be done is extensive. Attached are pictures.
Pictures:
"t-case 1"--shows how I recieved the setup
"t-case 2"--shows the severity of the rust on the tail housing and exterior, and the fact that someone cut the u-straps with a torch, not sure yet if can drill and tap the yoke and reuse it
"t-case 3"--shows a side shot of the housing
"blobbed mount"--is a picture of the bottom of the tanny mount where it bolts to the cross member mind you atleast a 5/8" bolt goes through here
"cross member fused"--is a pic of the cross member still bolted to the frame with a red line drawn to illustrate the seam between the frame and cross member and how much slag from teh cutting tourch is on it
"adapter distance"--is a pic of the t-case to tranny adapter from a distance to give you an idea of how much of this is rotting and falling apart
"adapter close up"--is a close up picture of the two upper bolts which were so rusted after I wire brushed them, so much rust came off the bolt head size went from a 9/16's to some metric size which I still can remove because they are so rusted in there and I cannot find the proper size wrench that will fit between a full set of metric and standard wrenches
Then again the 27th of FEB
Just checking to see if you recieved any of the pictures I sent in my last e-mail last week.
she replied back
