I am thinking of buyin a Dana 44A that is in a Grand in the bone yard.. (Still want to buy the gears from you Jeff..) That is my question.. If the gears are the same .. This axle will save me a ton of time .. Since its already a grand Cherokee axle.. If they wont fit then I will just buy your axle Jeff.
BUt eiter way.. I will need those 4:11 gears.. I looked on the Randys Ring and pinion site.. (Thats where I got the gears I have now..) But It doesnt discern between the 44 and the 44A.. Wonder how this will do.. I have also heard that the 44A had problems with noise .. I don t know why and I dont know if its a problem or not.. JUst rambling now...

All I know is that if it is a Dana 44, then it is either a low pinion or a high pinion. And that is all that determines which gear set works with the axle. I have a standard rotation D44, low pinion...as long as that axle is low pinion the gears should work. But, then again you know Jeep.... always mixing and matching. I am pretty sure that if it is a low pinion then the gears I have will work. Are you looking to do this swap soon??? |

I wasnt to .. But that depends on how the turn in the Bone yard acts..
Here is anther question... Would it be possible to take of the center section and replace it with an Iron 44? Or the tubes off the aluminum onto the iron section .. You know what I mean..
Just trying to save some work time.. I really want to do this but time and money are the key factors..
I am going to have some money soon (Not alot but some..) it will be enough to buy that axle ..(I hope,) and like I said .. Its a direct bolt in... WIth 3:73 gears.. I could regear or run it like it is. now that I am 2WD capable.. Just wondering if its feasable.. Rather than all the work of mounting control arm brackets and coil buckets and blah blah blah...
I guess I will need Mikes help on this one... Carl

I'd think pulling the tubes would be more work than just ounting brackets.... but what do I know? There are always leaf springs

I was just thinking about the trouble I had mounting the stupid coil buckets and control arm brackets and S/S mount and track bar mount and .....YOu get the picture.. | Take my words for what they are worth...mike also has a machine shop in his back yard and another very close, not impossible but the right tools and welding skills are esential, + lots of time...
about that d44 housing, a buddy of mine had one and the gear whine was obnoxious after 80,000 original miles..........got the dealer to reset new gears(why the dealer?).............started wheeling after that within 40,000 more it got bad again....something about the way those gears meshed and a flaw in the carrier design I believe made them groove a little harder after some mileage and start the whining up again.
