I recently purchased a 1989 Bronco with a 351. It is completely stock. it has BFG AT 31 x 10.5 that are a little dry but have a bunch of tread on them . I am planning on using this cars for both off roading and running around town. The plan is to get a lift on it and some big (33 x 12.5) tires some day. This is going to be a long process though. $$$$$. Any suggestions on what I "have" to do first. Basically, what is most important to get me the most performance out of my toy.

It all depends on what is more important to you whether it be looks or performance. I am going with performance before looks because there is no point in having it look like a beast without the beast in it. I have put on a K&N intake, an MSD 6A ignition, MSD distributor, Morosso wires, new coil, and 3" exhaust all the way back with magnaflow mufflers. I spent a little over a $1000 for that which is really good and definitely improved my performance. Another thing you might consider for it to look really good would be a soft top especially since summer is almost upon us. STC tops seem to be the best known place for soft tops but check around cause they aren't cheap. Like I said befoer it all depends on which direction you want to take. Make a list of priority items and go from there

WeLcome to tHe wonDerful woRld of BronCo's. First oFF.........a Bronco iz nOt a CaR

......alSo.......it iz nOt an suv

Bronco's are trUcks....trucks aRe touGH....they can be preTTy and thEy can be tOUgh.........but most of the tiMe they are prettY tough with a liTTle bit of uGly on the siDe.

If there are any mechanical problems take care of them first. Don't be afraid to take your top off when the weather's nice.........or for almost $400 you can buy a soft top from STC. In 5 minutes you can roll up the sides and back or in 15 minutes you can take the whole top off. You will have to drill almost 100 holes along the top bed rail and cab of your TrUck.

You want a lift and some 33 X 12.5's????......why not go with 35's or 37's????....they will give you more ground clearance and don't cost all that much more (depending on the manufacturer you choose). You will need the lift before you get the tires. And when you get the tires, 'specially if you go with 35's, 36's or 37's or larger, you will want to lower your gearing in the front and rear dif's so that you rpm's will be close to stock rpm's and so the 351 can turn those big meats alot easier. You will want either 4:10, 4:56 or lower....again depending on the size tires you buy.

While your in the dif's adding lower gear ratio's...how about adding lockers or limited slip?

Will your off-roading, in your Truck, consist of only.......mudding......rock-crawling......sand.....snow......or a combination of everything????? Aggressive tread tires (i.e. BFG Mud Terrains and others) tend to dig down into sand if you do not air down and if you use too much of the skinny pedal. All terrains work best in sand especially when aired down. For everything else, I would use a more aggessive tread tire. BTW....AT's are worthless in the mud.

I wouldn't know about snow......we don't get much of that stuff where I'm from....but you being in AZ, I'm sure it's not too far a drive to wheel in the snow.

If muddin's your thang.......you want more HP from your 351 to keep those RPM's up to get through the goo.

If you want to crawl.....low gear ratios and torque are your friends.

Any Wheeler can be a daily driver. Build it for what you want to do, and start savin' yo' stacks of cheese mang.
