Woods Race! July 9-10 Potawatomi Off-road Park and Campground in Fulton, Mo What to expect at a woods race?
Only one vehicle is allowed on each course. Depending on help and # of competitors, we should have about 6-8 courses running simutaniously. Each course has it's own unique obstacles that each vehicle in that class must manouver over in the best or shortest amount of time. How extreme are the courses?
A woods race is nothing like rockcrawling, nor is it like mud racing. I guess it sits almost right in the middle. As a driver, you must drive from a start line to a finish line. Between the 2 are cones, flags, trees, or tape marking the course. The course may consist of anything you might find on a normal Missouri trail ride. Course 1 might have a few shallow mud holes to cross (max 1.5 ft deep), and a few turns through a trail. Course 2 might consist of an off camber trail up a small hill, a turn, then down a steep hill to the finish. Course three might consist of a very steep climb then a rock ledge to drop off and a creek bed to drive up. Another course might provide flex, tires lifting, or even a straight away with no technical manouvers, just a race against time. Basically we are taking pre-existing trails and putting start and finish gates on them and calling them courses. Most of the super-modified courses will be "new trails". That should give you a good idea of what the courses in a woods race may consists of. Define the vehicle class structure.
As far as MoROC is concerned, we have 5 classes available. Each class has it's own courses (6-10) to run. The stock vehicles will not be taking the same lines as the super-modified. You should also be aware of the way we build our classes. Stock is 33" tires... modified stock is 35" tires. Both of these classes are not designed to break vehicles. They are designed to get people with daily driven rigs out to compete in races for fun. Now, note, I'm not saying there is not a possibility of damaging the vehicles, I'm saying, as long as the drivers don't get overly competitive and the drivers have some experiance offroad, the vehicles should make it through the trails free of dents and breakage. Lockers will not be mandatory in the stock or modified stock classes...but they would help. Now the legends class, super-modified, and open classes are more difficult terrain. Again, they are not designed to break vehicles, but unlike the stock and modified stock courses, these do provide the risk of such. These courses are designed for these competitors as most vehicles with 40"tires or taller are accepting of body damage and are not daily drivers. The hills on these courses are steeper, the rocks are bigger, the mud is slightly deeper (2 ft max), the creek beds are rougher. Well, you get the point.
Some woods races are like the baja 500. MoROC's is not. We are taking normal trails and throwing a set of start and finish gates on them and calling it a course. These trails will usually be taken at reasonable speeds of 5-10 miles per hour but some could withhold speeds up to 25 miles per hour without being "excessive speeds" for that trail. The way we are setting the courses is simular to werock in the sense that the trails or courses are designed to let the driver figure out the best lines over the obstacles. You, as the driver, are not trying to figure out the best way through each cone, but rather through each obstacle. (Our rockcrawling courses are designed the same way in that sense.) This technique is used to test drivers ability and even the spotters ability. With woods racing, a spotter is not mandatory, but is strongly encouraged. Please bring the registration form and money to the races. Pre-registration is closed. As this is our first race event, we planned to have most competitors register on race day.

The park will remain open all weekend to normal traffic. However, the area we are using will be fenced off for the races. Also, the $15.00 person admission includes full access of the park. |
