I dunno what tires ford puts on the EX's in the southern parts but if you guys also have the mud and snow tires on board, you might try switchen to straight HWY tires. I would expect you would get better milage.

I am quite happy with my 21mpg HWy. Its about the same as my bronco got and I had that for 19 years till it got rear ended and sucked up by the insurance company. The only thing I miss is the stick shift. It would have been nice to have the 6 speed standard w/pto on my EX.

I expect to be putting new tires on next year and I'm thinking of trying some road tires.

Does anyone have any comments about them and has anyone got any on?

Dave.

With all the horror story's of the 6.0 diesel's I will never own one. Sure Ford claims all the bugs are worked out but lots of people claim they had better MPG with there 7.3's. Lately there have been talks of replacing the 6.0 with a 6.4 V8 diesel made by another diesel motor manufacturer.
Ford is losing lots of loyal customers with the 6.0 that may never buy Ford again.
Recently Ford stuck International with a 170 million dollar bill for backing out of plans to produce a V6 diesel for the new F150's. Evidently Ford backed out on International after all the problems with the 6.0. Ford has a contract with International that goes until 2012. There are talks of Ford teaming with Cummins to build the next Ford diesel. Daimler Chrysler just extended the contract with Cummins for several more years, however Mercadees Benz may be planning a diesel for the Rams.
I would not hesitate to buy a Cummins Ford Excursion or Super Duty!!!
Ford and International should have really waited on this one.

I put on road tires and inflated to 60psi all around and realized a nice MPG gain on the highway. I would regularly get 17mpg.

I think the tires and the extra bit of inflation pressure was the real MPG gainer from my list of mods done. That; and a lighter foot.

Running the tires at the recomended pressure really helps the tires longevity. I usually check pressure monthly and rotate at each oil change which usually is around 5-8K miles. Now that I've got 8 $2.99 Sears filters it may be more often! I also bought a cheap torque wrench to check the lugs each rotate, 150lbs is what I've heard keeps the rotors from warping.
I noticed when I drive the Excursion vrs. my wonderfull wife I get better MPG, at least the overhead readout claims it. Shes like to use the pedal more than me and drive faster on the interstate.
I noticed it's best to cruise under 2,000 RPM's, which is 69.5 MPH in the F250 and around 66MPH in the X with no GPS.
BTW, Ford did give a disclosed amount of money to International for the $170 million bill it got stuck with. Ford must have been worried if a diesel in the F150 would sell good. What does a decked out 2004 F150 4X4 crew cab king ranch or Lariat list for? $38,000 or more? Tack on another $4,000 at least for the diesel option and you have a very spendy half ton pickup. The MPG would be high though you'd think, perhaps mid 20's?
In five years from now I'm sure all three will have diesel powered half tons, when one does the rest have to. Speaking of which GM is planning a duramax suburban however, the current 6.6 is suppose to be to big for the engine bay and Isuzu may create a smaller duramax diesel which may also find it's way into the half ton trucks and vans.
