Could be at anything over 2 inches on some vehicles, but for the most part you are safe with a Superduty at anything 4 inches or less.
If you are going six you will probably need a double carden shaft installed in the rear and possibly the front.
My truck is lifted about 4 inches in the front and 5 inches in the rear with a 5.5 inch Fabtech spring lift - I left out the one inch block they call for in the rear - it is not necessary on a 2000 Excursion -to get a level effect. Trimming was required on the front air damn for 35" BFG AT KO tires.
I had to lengthen the rear drive shaft about 2" to correct vibration from insufficient spline engagement at 70 MPH and over. I flipped the rear factory blocks with bump stops in the rear and moved the left one to the right side and vice versa to correct the pinion angle to within 1.5 degrees of output shaft to eliminate orbital u-joint vibration.
FYI - at first I tryed rotating the differential housing up to compensate for the drive shaft length and it worked to some degree, but not enough to really fix the problem.

Every person I have ever talked to, asked, heard etc etc that had a lift has said over 6" and you need to change your stuff out. Below that was no prob and only a few had problems at 6.
