Which Excursion should I buy?

I figured this is the best place to get advice. I have a family of four (two little one's) and am looking at the excursion. I really don't need it. I do not plan to tow and don't need 4wd, I just like the way it looks and will feel safe when my children are in it. My father is a dealer and I have been going to the auctions looking. Originally I was looking at the 5.4 but got turned off after hearing some 40 thousand mile x's with the bearing knocking also do they have enough power?. So here is the question; which engine would best suit my needs? Thanks

here are the average prices they bring wholesale in Fl
2000 xlt with the 5.4 or v10 2wd $16500 to $18000 with under 45k. psd $2k more
limited is roughly $2k more

V10 or PSD. I would highly recommend the PSD because of the 100,000 mile warranty, its longetivity, fuel economy, and power. For an extra $2k, you'll get 15-16 MPG around town on average. On the highway you will get 17-19 MPG on average. The V10 just isn't able to produce those kinds of numbers. With the 44 gallon tank in these vehicles and 17-19 MPG, you can go a LONG ways on one tank of fuel. You'll love the power of the diesel...it doesn't skip a beat on the highway -- you set the cruise, and it goes! I don't do much towing at all either, but I still opted for the diesel.

Seeing as how you live in Florida, you really won't have to deal with the cold weather quirks of a diesel.

If you can afford it, go for the PSD!

I second that! I currently have a V10 with the 4.30 gears and I love it BUT I planned on keeping this truck for awhile and the diesel will out live the gas motor. I plan buying a used 2004 6.0 psd in Nov or Dec next yr.

You were wise to stay away from the V8 ... too small for the X.

I've had many gasoline engines hit the 200K mark. My last gas F350 never had the valve covers off, except to replace the leaking gaskets. Got tired of the vehicle before the engine would ever let go.

In southeast Virginia, diesel sells for about 25-cents more per gallon than gas. So, it would take many miles before one would ever see any savings with what I see as a small difference in MPG. I routinely get 12MPG around town, and better than 16 MPG on the highway ... and 12 towing 5,200# of car trailer ... all with the 6.8L V10 gas motor. Diesel fuel prices in your area may cause the scales to tip more towards a diesel. But bear in mind that if you ever travel to remote areas, you could be hard-pressed to find diesel fuel.

I agree there are many situations where the diesel triumphs. Diesels are good for many types of driving. But if you're going to use the X as the family station wagon, I'd go with the gas V10.

I have to debiunk the "hard finding diesel in remote areas"....

Diesel is EVERY where...
now you may PAY more than you'd like because it's at the corner gas station and not at the truck stops....
but it's everywhere !

Remote areas - isn't that where FARMS are - and don't farmers use diesel tractors ?

NEVER had a problem finding it...
EXpecially with a 44 gal tank and a range of overl 500 or so miles on it ....

Birdman, I was thinking the same thing , about picking up a 2004 PSD at the end of the year. I love my X but its lonely and needs a brother.

JohnBoy, It may be everywhere you go, but I've been in some areas where finding just gasoline was difficult, let alone diesel. Such as around ski resorts ... even though the resorts are running gas & diesel equipment ... they usually have their own filling station. Ever driven I-40 from CA into AZ? There used to be a stretch of road ... signs posted ... no GASOLINE for the next 100 miles! At that time, I didn't ponder how far it was to the next diesel pump.

Granted, diesel is available in a lot of areas .... but you still have to LOOK for it. Unlike gasoline availability at at any corner station.

For the initiator of this thread, I personally believe the gas V10 would be a better choice. That is only MY opinion. You are welcome to think otherwise, and I don't have any problem at all with it. Bottom line? The guy will buy whatever he chooses based on his own set of circumstances. Either way ... gas or diesel ... he's getting a fine form of transportation. I wish him well. Oh, and you, too!

(& 100 miles is about 1/4 tank on the 44 gal Ex...)

And yes,
if I go to unfamiliar places it may be difficult to find ANYTHING Even where you're going!

But with Mapquest, yahoo-maps - I always get an idea of the new areas I'm going to before I go... and having been lost & learned (the hard way) that sometimes my plans change and I wish I had printed a map of 'this new' area we ended up in...
maybe that's why I'm looking for a portable Nav system...
Hmmm... maybe I should just tow the wife's Lincoln LS with the super Nav system and use it?

I agree - the Ex is the perfect travelling vehicle - no matter which one you get - but the new 5 speed auto with tow-haul and the 6.0L cruises along!
