What size rims is everybody running? I'm looking at rim diameters ranging from 16 to 18" and rim widths from 8 to 10". What is the ideal size for a lifted rig. I want to lift from 3 to 4.5inches and need some pointers on wheel choice. I've heard when you go wider than 8" on rim width you start placing undo stress on your suspension and handling components - making thinks wear out way faster, i.e. bearings, brakes, etc. Also, how about backspacing - what is the ideal backspacing on a rim for an X. That probably depends on what size tire you run. It seems that 16.5x12.5x33 or 16.5x12.5x35 is a popular choice. Thanks |

Hey Marty,
This is something which gets taked up quite a bit in the off-road world. With regards to wear and tear on wheel bearing, etc... you're really only going to experience that sort of dilemma when you start doing the bling bling wigged out wheel spacer thang.
Using 10" rims over 8" really isn't going to make a difference, if you sit and think about it, because the inside edge of the tread is still pretty well going to be sitting in the same place as the 8" rim would be - unless you talking little to no backspacing which would look silly anyway
The 10" rim is going to make the tire look wider than the same tire on an 8" rim.
An 8" rim does hold a bead a lot better if you plan on airing down your tires for rockcrawling, mudding, etc.....
I'm sure someone on here can shed a little more light on this topic coming from the Excursion world. I've just given you my experience as a 'froader.
HTH!
