Hi Wade,
We're very new to this site but I saw your post and had to respond. We recently purchased (about 2 months ago) a 2001 X Limited V-10 and absolutely love it. We recently finished what we consider stage 1 of our entertainment system for the kids. Briefly, it consists of the following; Pioneer touch screen head end, Pioneer navigation, Farenheit 6.8" widescreen sun visor monitor (so Jody can watch what the kids are doing), Icon-TV 9" widescreen flip down between the first and second row, Icon-TV 9" widescreen flip down between the second and third row and a Sony PS 2. We thought this system through many, many times and decided to do it in stages because we knew we would miss things. I can give you more detailed information if you wish. We wanted to keep everything as oem looking as possible so everything is either hidden or flush mounted. I will also send some pix if you wish. There are many things to consider when installing a/v, at least if you don't want it to look like an afterthought. Good luck with everything.

Mike
I would like to see some pictures of the X mobile system. Who did you buy them from?

Hi Wade,
I posted some pictures in the registry today. I think the easiest way to navigate there is just to click on my name. Sorry if that isn't correct, I'm very new to this site. My background includes custom home theater, so I called in some favors to get most of the equipment. We were also going to use headrest monitors but we both agreed (at least for now) that it may be overkill, so I now have two Farenheit T-7002HR monitors on ebay. My wife didn't want the truck torn apart for a month so I tracked down a local company, Mobile Environment in Morrisville, PA 215-295-6700 they did a great job. We're still working out a few minor bugs but we expected that. If I can be of any help, let me know. Good luck.

Mike,
Have you thought about having a reverse camera put in?
It looks like that the installer took the middle vent moved it back and put the video in where the vent was. Did that cause any problems? Did that make the screen to far back for the back seat to see it?
Thanks

Charles,
The drop downs were F90WIR's they weren't meant to be flush mounted and come with some half baked black plastic pod to mount the actual monitor in. As you can see though, ditch the pod and you get a nice clean flush fit. I put a few pictures of the pod in my gallery so you could get an idea of what I'm talking about. As far as the cost goes, the msrp on their website (http://www.icon-tv.org/Overhead%20Monitors.1.html) is $1999.00 (lmao), they're out of their minds. I'm not really sure what they "actually" cost me because I called in some favors to get most of my equipment. At any rate you should be able to pick them up for well below $1,000.00 I would imagine. I'll make some calls and see if I can zero in on a price. Thanks for the comments.

Wade,
The camera was going in from the start, then my wife (who's vehicle this is) thought it wasn't necessary because of the back up sensors. That lasted until she read through the manual for the Pioneer head end and realized it has an input for a camera that automatically switches to the camera when you put it in reverse. Now she wants the camera in. She's goiing to have to wait awhile though because I fractured my shoulder a few weeks back. I think I may remove the lock for the rear window and place the camera in the cylinder hole. We'll see I haven't given it a lot of thought yet.
Moving the vent back was an afterthought, I knew where I wanted the monitors placed for each seat for maximum visibility, smacking your head on it, etc. Since almost the entire roof is one big plastic duct my friend said why don't we cut another hole and put the third vent back in. I didn't really give it a thought but I'm glad he did, It looks better and maintains the three original vents (not that it makes a whole lot of difference as far as the a/c goes).
I took me forever to find acceptable monitors though. I was concerned with picture quality, off axis viewing, screen format, and maximum size while keeping an oem look. I have to hand it to Icon-TV, the picture quality and off axis viewing of this model (can't speak for others) is fantastic. It seems most of the 12 volt world is still using 4:3 aspect ratio screens and going with that format I could have gotten a 12 or maybe a 14 inch monitor in, but coming from a custom home theater background, I wanted to stick with the 16:9 widescreen. All current movies and most video games are 16:9 As you can see, the headliner of the truck is very contoured and I could have chosen the F152WIR (same exact monitor but 15") but I didn't want to reform the headliner. The F90WIR's fit perfectly between the contours. Also the 16:9 offer an added bonus, I can still see out of the rear view mirror when the kids have the monitors down.
Sorry for rambling guys. I try to investigate every aspect of a project before I jump in, and if I can save someone some grief by my experience I'm happy.
If you have any other questions, feel free.
Mike
Some food for thought; We haven't even addressed video switching or audio yet..........
Almost forgot... Mobile Environment of Morrisville PA 215-295-6700 can help with any questions or equipment. These guys are great. Contact Matt (a fellow firefighter) Andrew or Joe. You won't be disappointed |
