Hi Everyone.
I have a 2001ex 7.3 and would like to get a little better HP and milage.
I was looking at the Super Chip microprogrammer and the GRANATELLI/DIABLO SPORT PREDATOR.
They both have economy, sport and performance tune modes.
But do I also have to look at upgrading my Trans converter or anything else? Is it really necessary?
I only use it for work and carry the kids bikes. I never tow anything. I just drive back and forth.
I would like to get more power but not if I have to change anything else like the trans or ex-pipes.

PS I almost traded my 7.3 ex for a crew cab 6.0 dsl. I backed off once I read ALL the negative posts on this site and a couple of others I read.
I love this thing and I rather make this truck a little more fun and economical to drive.

chips are like women, you choose what sounds best to you. as far as mileage,you may gain a little, usually you loose some bacause the truck runs so great you tend to drive more agressively. i have my own preference (TTS) sorry had to throw that in.  you will put more load on the transmission with the chip than it was designed for. we figure the transmission was designed to handle 110% of its rating. that means its suppose to handle 250 hp, 550 or so torque towing 11000 lb on a good day(everything being perfect). well we know the 4R100 can barely pull its behind off a toilet seat. if you decide to tow(remember you are begining to tax the torque converter) the chip will destroy your transmission.

But do you/all think I should still upgrade anything in the trans. Like the TC?
I only want a little more HP and Milage imporvement.
This beast will not tow anything ever.

I had a 2002 7.3L Ex that cratered the tranny @ 13,000 miles when I tried to back up my driveway...
So Any MORE power can definetly 'influence' the tranny !!!
At the time, I wasn't happy about it... but I did get to trade it in @ full MSRP on a new '03 4x4 6.0L which I LOVE !!!

Hey JohnBoy.
Your tanny broke as you backed up? How steep is your driveway?
I have now 20K miles on my truck and it's running great.
I wanted a new crew with the PSD 6.0 but heard so many things that I decided to wait at least a year,
I ran into a guy with an F250 extended cab p/u and I asked him about his truck .
He was very proud of it and he said it has 247K miles on his truck. He has only replaced the glow plugs and an A/C compressor. No engine or tranny problems ALL is original.
So do we have a few lemon tranny's out there?
Just curious.

Th driveway is about 30 degrees....
but, truth be told...
it was one of those going forward off the driveway, and my wife said something about needing to go back in the house for the THIRD time and we were late already, so I threw it in reverse and you know the rest of the story.... BIG POW and that was it....
The dealership couldn't imagine WHAT I had done... and when I told him I just was backing up...
He said it looked like a grenade had went off in there...
I did remind him that our 24 hour 7 day a week roadside assitance siad they couldn't do anything until the next morning... so I drove it like that 10 miles or so to the dealer...
Figured it was gone already so what the hey....
