Problems w/02 7.3 PSD 4x4 LU package Excursion in 5 months since delivery (11K miles) as of 1/27/03
1). Intermitant rear window switch - replaced by dealer.
2). Roof seam not fully welded at factory. Rained inside - new carpet kit and headliner (dealer and body shop made other mistakes - fixed but another story - ask me). - came out worse than I should have (damaged truck). Did I say ?
3). Coolant residue stained hood blanket - no source found (think they over-filled it at a service interval) - replaced by dealer.
4). Brake master cylinder leaking fun in the rain in 3.5 tons of sled. In the shop now being fixed.
I love the truck albeit my wife and all around me laugh at me. Any similar stories? |

MB, sorry to hear of your troubles. I found my X used with 45K on the clock. The only thing wrong so far was the rear drive shaft had too much runnout. It made a deafining hum between 45 and 65 mph. (The dealer fixed it no charge. My dealer is a small Ford dealer and really has to keep the customers happy to stay in business. They sure won me over.) Other than that there are the usual used vehicle noises, but so far so good. It could be that the previous owner had to get the "bugs" worked out and then traded it in. I've been very pleased so far. I hope you get everything straightened out. Good luck and keep us informed.

Sorry to hear about your issues!!!
I to have a 2002 'X' (w/V10) that I bought in April of 2002. Knock on Wood ( Ouch, that hurt my head), I have not had one issue (YET!!!). I have 26K on mine as it is a daily driver to/from work and business trips (I am in Sales).
You might want to investigate if you are a candidate for the Lemon Law (if you have such a law in your area).

Well, yes and no. In California it's probably easier to go lemon than some other states but that's not really the point. None of the issues are really related (i.e. repeated transmission failure, engine problems, etc). Ford did not want to build a POS and to give the dealer credit they take it in and fix it (or try) . The reality is the QA both at MFG in Kentucky and dealer service here on the West Coast is poor to say the least, with service department credibility being suspect (in my experience only and I do not say that lightly or with any undue disrespect). Blue Oval is not so prestegious IMHO. Bottom line is that profitability for Ford declines and really there is no reason for it. I want to stick with the truck, it's great to drive, I parted with my old 72' F250 4x4 (remember the high boys) shortly after getting the Excursion and I'll tell you so far the LS diff and 4wd is great , equal if not better from ability with incomparable comfort , but not sure I'll get 30 years out of this one |

Bummer about your trouble. Knocking on wood, but loving my 02 PSD 4X4. 6500 miles, and can't find anything to complain about. I'd buy another one tomorrow. I work with a guy that drives a mini. I love to park next to him! |

Ok here is my FORD Horror story have to get it off my chest before i die of streess
2000 4x4 limited with all the bells and whistles new 9 miles on purchase
1. Drove off the lot and back shock mount broke because i decisded to drive off the 3 inch little curb. Dealer replaced it.
2. Drove to the first sop light with the air on and put the breaks on and went out into the intersection because the ABS kicked on, because truck yanked over to the left for no reason.
Dealer replaced rotors at 500 milesm and calipers
3. Took friends to beach and every body got scared from the roaring noises heard at 58mph. Also windshield wipers came on with no reason. Delear fixed recalled switch, and semi fixed roar.
4. Took my daughter to the snow and doors rattled because rubber bump stops fell out. Also 4wd switch did not work and got stuck. Dealership fixed rubber bump stops but fell out on the way home. 4 wd switch acutator fixed.
5. Went to dinner with wife in my NEW FORD! and smoke came from headlight switch so i turned the vehicle off and disconected battery. Took it to the dealer next day and recall on the headling switch because it catches on fire.
6. Desided to really try the 4wheel drive so i went to the forrest and went through a puddle and then the breaks puslated and yanked to left. Shock mounts broke in rear, abs light came on. Rubber bump stops (That were remaineng) fell off so the doors and back barn door rattled for 2 hrs on the drive home besides haveing to see the dentist because the breaks shook my teeth out (1500 miles on it) Dealer turned the rotors, fixed the rubber, shok monts, abs light sensor bad in front from all the shaking because rotors wapred.
7. Went to Costco with extra money to fill this Ford forest killing marvel full of fatty food and in front of the store some little chevey truck slamed on his breaks and i slamed on mine and my trusty ford breaks helped me yank left when i needed to go right, abs kicked in and i drove right over that little chevey. Nobody heart but the chevey, decided not claim on insurence and went to a body shop nearby and payed 3500 smackers (My costco fund for the year) to fix the chevey.
8. On the way home desided to listen to the famous FORD 5 CD changer, cranked it up and started hearing music, then it skipped all over the place made the doors sound like a rap albume.
Took it to the dealership and they replaced the CD changer, and fixed the breaks again.
9. Went to visit my mom 8 hr drive with the family and dog and half of the house in the back, Listend to roaring sound the hole way, you get used to it after 3 hrs, then service engine light came on. Went to a rest stop to pee and tell wife "its nothing those things come on if you slam the door to hard". Looked under Ex like i was a pro and nothing wrong. when we just were ready to get off freeway a POP was heard and then the loud machine gun sound that made the breaks pusating sound look like a library reading area. The Smog exaghust sensor blew out of the manifold. Well drove on and bragged how great ford was to fix these things. Well they wanted the car for 3 days because there were so many others ahead of me getting trannys and torque converters replaced so i just forked out the 50 bucks and bought a sensor. Replaced it and off we were
10. Shock mounts broke again and went to 4x4 shop and had them install a lift kit (Springs not blocks, new pitman arm, new welded on shock mounts and 8 raceing shocks 3" tripple bypass shock, replaced breaklines with steel braided lines, pro comp 35x12.50 tires. Ran great no spongy feel in brakes. rides like a king and able to drive over curbs. ran great for next 25,000
11. Driving on highway and rear large window comes loose and almost flys out. Took to dealership and they had a ford writeup on it and replced both rear windows for free. (Recall safty items are always free at ford.)
12. Went to wash the top of EX and discoverd that the rear barn door hinges and back part of the roof was still just grey primer specled with Fords high quality paint job. Took it to the dealership and they said the warrenty does not cover paint, just failurs and body rot. Got pissed and drove home,
14. Went to the video store and ran over a speed bump and overhead console fell down and hit me in the head and scared me. Had a leatherman tool kit knife and put it back together.
15. While i was trying to listen to the CD player in the rain driving to ventura over the roaring and rumbling snd i noticed that people flipped me off when i passed them. Well when i got to thriftys i noticed water in the R/H and L/H blinker assemblys.. i mean alot like ther was a gold fish looking at me. The blinkers of corse did not work. I took it to the dealership and they replaced the lest side. go figure?
16. I took it to the car wash and discovered that all the door gaskets had worn through the paint to the bare metal, also the 2 barn doors in the back had a 1/4 wear through the fiberglass and paint. Also that the rubber bump stops fell out of the doors again making rattels. Also that the body frame rubber monts were craking and rotting out. Took to the dealership and warrenty does not cover wear items after 36,000 miles.
17. Lound bangs and pops heard when i turn or punch it on the gas. Put some headers on the car and a new exaughst system changing the stupid sheet metal that rattles and hums from the roaring in the back end.
18. Drove to San Fransisco and noticed that 3rd gear was slipping, and shuttering when starting. Took it to dealership and they charged me 500 smackers for a mystery test that said everything was ok.
19. Drove down I5 and the it slipped out of gear in the middle on nowhere 250 miles from nearest dealer ship, at night of course. Well called that Ford roadside assistance that i got with the $3500 dollar extended bumber to bumper warrenty. They only tow free within 10 miles. Ended up paying $1000 for a oversized tow to dealership. Slept in car and In Bakersfield it would take about 2 weeks to work on it. Left my EX and went home. Warrent covered Torqe converter.
20 Picked up car and they said it runs great. Noticed that they did not even clean all the ATF fluid off the thing. Started driving home and noticed that the service engine light was on and smoke comming out of back. I pulled over and discoverd that all the fluid was blowing out again.
I went to a market and bought another 3 gallons of it and filled it and drove home. Noticed that grinding noises in tranny.
21. Took it to my small town dealership and they decided to replace the tranny with a RE-Furbished one because other dealership left metal in it and it ruined the tranny. 3 weeks later i picked it up and, drive it off the light and check engine light came on. Also rumble heard when gas is left off.
22. Took it back they kept it another week and said it was fixed. I drove it and it slammed through all the gears, and rumbled when you coast.
23 I took it to another dealership and they charged me 1500 smackers to tell that it was fine and besides i lifted it and the driveline is making the noise. I told them that everything was fine tell 100 miles ago when another dealership replaced the tranny. They took my money and told me that they couldnt help me i needed to take it back to where they started the work. I said that is a days drive and i cant do that. With a Ford smile they said " have a nice day sir" you should have had us do the work.
24. I call ford from the page in the owners manule and they tell me to take it back to the guy that just sent me away. So i did and they only charged me 670 smackers for nothing but telling me that they can't help me tell the driveline is in factory specs! I told them that i have had the lift sence the 25,000 miles. They said leave it here another 2 weeks and we will fix it. Well when i went to pick it up they said they couldn't because my 75000 mile warrenty just expired i said there was only 67,000 on the car. They said i should have read my agreement because it said 75,000 miles in the big print and then on the next page said or 3 years.
25. I take it back to Ojai again where they put the tranny in they told me no problem and kept it 2 more weeks. I drove it off the lot and the 4wh switch didnt work. So i kept it a day and then took it back in. They said it would be another week tell it's done. Well i picked it up and drove off the lot and no 4wd switch working and now fluid leaking from all over the transfer case. I took it back pissed and asked them what they did, they told me they replaced a bearing in the transfer case, Well now when i drive it rumbles,roars slams into gear, leaks fluidm smokes, rusts on all the door gaskets, fish swimming in my blinkers, no rubber door stops, seat smokes when you turn on seat heater, can't 4x4 leather comming apart on all the seats, engine misfires, steering wheel missing color because it wears off after 3000 miles, and what the hell do i do?
Well you ask if they are great?
Well i no one place i do not have to go to (Hell) because i have already gone there.. Ford took me there.
This car is a POS and nver never buy one. If you have a warrenty Lemon it out on the breaks alone, make them buy it back and go buy a Toyota Sequia or another car that lasts longer then a pair of shoes.

I am now suing Ford for breach of contract, fauls advertising, endangerment, gross neglect, and false representations. I do have all the reciepts and paper work. I will fight tell they are forced to drive my new FORD EXCURSION 4x4!

Wow, you're muh more patient than I am !
I'm glad I've not had problems like that with mine - and my 4x4 has suprised me with the things it's gottn me out of...
With all due respect, it's sounds like MOST of your issues were with the dealer svc dept...
Rotors have a known issue if torque incorrectly, the non-repairs they did, the poor trouble shooting you alluded to ! You're a patient guy !
I'd find another dealer real quick !
Good luck and I'd look into a buy back REAL quick, if for nothing else than gross incompentence!

Yeah wow, i read all of that. ^^
I have had my 2000 X, 7.3 diesel for awhile now. I have romped the hell out of it, driven it all over the great state of Arizona and never had a problem with it.
I love it, and wont trade it.
My rig has 67k miles on it now. ORIGINAL rotors. Mine are not warped or fubared at all, and the X is driven in daily traffic.
