was looking around and read about a fan clutch system used to increase hp and fuel mileage by not working when it is not needed.now along those lines but way cheaper could you not remove the fan completely and use a after market electric fan kind of like what muscle car guys and gals do to their cars? just a thought???

alot of views no thoughts? come on guys what do ya think? sounds like it could work. the semi trucks we run have the same fan clutch idea that i mentioned but verrry exp. could a electric fan do the trick and save fuel and gain hp?

Isn't there already a fan clutch in there? I mean, if you can easily rotate the blades by hand, then it is attached to a centrifugal clutch mechanism. I haven't checked, but I would be awfully surprised to find the fan runs in direct proportion to fanbelt speed.

I have an electric fan on my GT40, but it runs at a constant speed when it's on. Hence, it would not exactly match the road / wind speed at all times. It actuates by a temp-sensor ... and I'm considering a disconnect switch for when I'm running many miles on the interstate. Of course, as dumb as I can be at times, I'd probably forget to reconnect when I got in city traffic.

jimmy, I believe the fan setup you are discussing is made by US Gear. Power Stroke Registry magazine did a story on that awhile back if I remember correctly. Seemed to think it was pretty good for some applications, but didn't add much in other use modes.
Hope this helps.

I changed a fan clutch for a customer who bought his own HD unit from some parts house. it was some big name company. the customer said he wouldnt pay the $175.00 or so for a Ford unit. it looked good and worked good till he pulled a grade. it began to run hot. he finaly came back and had me put the Ford unit on and solved the problem. be carefull with aftermarket fans.

I wonder about electric fans on a PSD. The parisitic drag wouldn't be as noticable, but at least you would free up some power. Of course you'd want to have a fan(s) that draw plenty of air when they are on.....

Jim
i did some testing on my own F250 460 motor with electic fans. i installed 2 huge fans and ran a thermostat to kick them in at 180 deg. in town it was great, i didnt notice any power increase. what i did notice was in hot weather the truck ran hot. the problem was that after the electric fans kicked in at 180, they were playing catch-up and could never cool the engine down to normal. if i overode the thermostat with my switch it seemed to be ok.but it still ran hotter than normal pulling hills. i vote no on electric fans unless used as an auxilery.
