My 2003 X has the poorest steering of any car/SUV I've ever driven including my 1988 K5 Blazer, which had a straight axle up front also. I made the X steering better by removing the factory steering stabilizer and lowering the air pressure in the tires to forty-five PSI. It is not relaxing on the highway to drive, but around town it's not that bad.

You SHOULD consider the rear sway bar !!! CHEAP upgrade Mine was < $150 installed...
Tremendous improvement in my '02 4x2 7.3 Ex's ride with the sway bar...
I guess I did more 'cornering at speed' with that one than you do....
My new '03 4x4 6.0L came with a factory front and rear sway bars...
but I feel they are not as good as the Hellwig...
I guess hare in Texus the sides of the road have a few more dips in them - really helped us...
2005 6.0L 4x4 Eddie Bauer Ex
2003 6.0L 4x4 Limited Ex - traded in (BooHoo )

And change front swaybar bushings to polyurathane, check your air pressure in your tires, change your shocks and check your ball joints.
