Quick question for those who are more informed than I. Moma ok'd some funds for more toys and I'm considering upgrading my T/C with one from Suncoast and having a transgo shift kit put on my 2001 7.3. It's got 62,000 miles, and runs well, but I've read so much about the T/C being the week point, that i though now might be a good time to address it. Will doing such improve it, or is it simply a waste, without completely rebuilding the tranny with more improvements? The tranny seems to work fine, but b4 i go the route of a flip chip, I'ld like to upgrade this first. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Just wait a few and Gearman (the local tranny guru) will be along to answer your question!

we dont know what condition your trans is in to begin with. we do know that you have a diode (second gear) that is defective and should have been replaced by Ford (secret recall) my X had one. it is a must, to replace this diode with a sprag unit. if you install a chip, you must address the torque converter. the 2k and later 4R100 transmissions have what is called a PWM torque converter apply. (Pulse Width Modulated). that means the computer slips the converter clutch on and of for creature comfort.(absolutely insane). a good converter is a must and a TransGo shift kit is mandatory as is the TransGo lock-up valve (takes away the slipping apply and release for the converter clutch and makes it a solid on-off). i think you need a good shop when its time for your trans update. you may not need complete trans. i can help you with whatever you may need. if you need Suncoast or any of their products i can supply them at a discount (means less profit for me, but thats ok) Suncoast does not discount to anyone and does not need to. i have other alternatives. Suncoast is the ultimate.

Hey Mike: Thanks a bunch, I was hoping you might chime in, because you certainly have the knowlege and give awesome advice. I most definetly will be in touch in the next few weeks to discuss this with you. I'm a new transplant here in Tucson. Back east, i had several shops that i could trust, nothing like the honesty of a good old boy from the south, but here, it's much different. Last week I called around seeing if anyone would do a trango shift kit and T/C change and they acted as if I were speaking a foreign language. I used to do most of my own work in my younger years, and after getting screwed here a few times for basic maintenance I've dusted off the old tools and begun to do my own work again, and enjoying it as well. I worked on a few tranny's back years ago on my old Chevy SS's, but have never attempted anything in years. Plus, I am a firm believer in purchasing quality, as it pays off in the long run. Would you happen to know anyone in your industry in my area, that could assist with the labor? Thanks again.

Gearman, do the '02's also need the diode replaced? I would assume that the diode has to do with controlling the pulse width modulation during shifts.
Thanks in advance Mike!

the diode is a mechanical diode, not electrical. Ford had good luck using this in the 4R70W (crown vic trans) but it did not do the job on our big 4R100. the diode takes the place of the sprag unit (one way locking mechanical clutch). the 02 4R100 does not have this diode.

Is there a way to tell if they have done this silent recall? I'd hate to have my tranny go out simply because it has the old diode.

i think only Ford can give you this info. call your local dealer, give him your Vin# and have him check it.
