So with all these cool engine mods, my SES (Service Engine Soon) light kept illuminating, setting a EEC code and de-fueling the engine for a couple of days until the EEC reset itself automatically.

What happens is that the MAP sensor sees >24 PSI of boost at full throttle and de-fuels the engine to prevent damage. With a hot (110 HP) program installed and an ATS turbo housing, I am pushing 29-30 PSI of boost at full throttle.

I found on the Diesel Innovations site a kit that places a pressure relief valve (like those found on air compressors) inline with the MAP sensor line. From their web site description:

"With this device installed between the intake manifold and the MAP sensor, boost pressures above 24PSI will be released so that the SES light is not set and the MAP sensor does not command the PCM to go in to a defueling mode. This is a mechanical device and as such, allows the SES light to function as designed."

They have two versions of the kit--one with just the relief valve and another with a tee for a boost gauge.

So, what the hell. Without thinking it through engineering-wise, I ordered and installed the kit. It definitely limited the pressure that the MAP sensor saw(just as advertised), but it also limited the pressure my Boost gauge was reading (inline with the MAP sensor, the usual place for a boost gauge installation, I think). So the result was no more SES problems, but I only saw a maximum of 24 PSI at the gauge--not accurate.

So I decided to re-think the installation. What was happening is that the releif valve simply bled off any pressure IN THE ENTIRE MAP LINE. What I needed was a pressure regulator, not a relief valve. Installed after the boost gauge and before the MAP sensor, a pressure regulator would show full line pressure to the gauge, but limit pressure to the MAP Sensor.

So, off to Lowes where I purchased (on closeout, no less) a $20 pressure regulator designed for an air compressor. I installed the included dial gauge and used my air compressor to simulate boost pressure and dialed in a 24 PSI setting on the regulator. Locked the collar on the adjuster and installed it in place of the Diesel Innovations boost releif valve.

Problem solved. Now full pressure is shown at the gauge and the MAP sensor (after the regulator) only sees whatever pressure I've dialed in on the regulator. After some fine tuing, I'm happy with the installation.

So in the end, I can't recommend the Diesel Innovations Kit if you intend to use it with a boost gauge (although I have been very satisfied with their other products--see my other posts). If you don't run a boost gauge and have made mods to the engine, their kit is great and works as advertised.

By the way, there is a guy on eBay that lists the kit as I assembled it for about $35 (I think). Definitely a better way to go.
