I have a '01 and the thing is GREAT! I have noticed sounds coming from the front end, possibly from around the drivers side area. When at a slow speed, if you move the steering wheel back and fourth a sound that resembles a bad cv joint can be heard. Also while going slow, a knocking sound under the drivers feet is present. This sound can be heard when going over bumps or just normal driving. I have had the thing checked at two different places, and one kept it all day. Nobody can figure this out. Could it be a frame and chassis issue? It has new shocks, and everything appears to be tight in the front end. These sounds are DRIVING ME NUTS! Oh yeah, it is also a v8 4x2. Thanks. TOM

Tom, here are a few things to try. I had a simular problem with my X and after checking everything up front (drop links, leaf springs, shackles, steering, etc.) I found the passenger side ball joints were bad. They had way to much slop. I have not yet replaced them yet, but plan to do upper and lower on both sides soon. I also replaced the anti sway bar bushings with energy suspension poly bushings. That got rid of alot of knocking and clunking. When I inspected the Ford bushings they appeared ok, but when I took them out they were like jellyfish. I am convinced the sway bar was rattling around inside the bushing clamps. Energy suspension bushings are much better and the "feel" of the front suspension is great. A set of two is only 20.00 at autozone and it only took me 20 minutes to do both sides.

also check the brakes, Ford uses springs to hold the brake pads in place and these can wear out causing the pads to rattle around in the caliper. You may or may not be able to feel this under your feet.

When I was underneath, I noticed the bushinings on the sway bar up where it bolts to the underside appear to be split. I guess that is a good possibility. I have had it up on jackstands and really pushed fore and aft on the top and bottom of the tire to check the ball joints. They appeared to be fine. There was no play that I could tell. I had a couple of places check that and they did not mention anything. I will double check the other stuff. Thanks a lot, more to follow..... TOM

Tom I have not put this type of bushings anywhere else yet. It would be nice to replace the drop link bushings, on the anti-sway bar with poly also, but nobody makes a direct replacement that I know of. If you can not find the energy suspension bushings let me know, I could get them for you and ship them out to you.

No go at Auto Zone. I appreciate the offer of picking some up for me. I found some at 4 Wheel Parts and Acc. here in Houston. Of course, as is with all of their junk. It has to be ordered. More to follow. Thanks G!

Hey Gomobius, I received the bushings, but these things WILL NOT GO IN. I don't know if it is the wrong part or what. The number is 4.5180r from Energy Suspension. Does that sound familier. It says for 4wd 36mm application on the box. I have a 2wd. However, they said this is it and that stock brackets are used. How did you do it? Any hints? Thanks, TOM

Tom sorry I have not responded sooner , been out of town. I will see if I can come up with some pictures for you. Removing and installing new bushings is easy , just remove the two bolts holding on the bushing clamp, take off the clamp and old bushing. Put the supplied grease on the new bushing and reinstall. Do only one side at a time, and remember you don't have to disconnect the drop links.
You can call me if you like 574-674-0281

I think all the front factory sway bars are 36mm in diameter or maybe it is 33mm I don't remember, either way the diameter is the important factor in the correct fit.
