I have a 00 EX 4x4 with PSD. Pushing 90k and wondering about the front bearings. I know you can't service them like the older trucks. Does the whole unit get replaced ? What does Ford charge
for this service. I'm having no problems yet, just trying to be prepared.

Mine went at 130k. If you have been running oversized tires or wider rims be prepared to replace them soon!!!!! My X had stock rims and tires until 115k and then I went with oversized 305's on the stock rims. The bearings are part of a complete assembly including a new ABS sensor and you should be able to get it for around $350. It is easy to change, but you need to be handy and have an assortment of breaker bars and heavier duty then normal socket set. Dealer should charge about $75-100 per side I would guess. Check them every 3k or less after 100k. Just jack up the axle and see if you have any top to bottom slop. They will start with squeaking or pulsating brake symptoms and within no time at all damage can be done to the outer shaft if you dont catch it quick enough and then the repair cost starts racking up.

Good luck

I've got this problem right now. My left front started exhibiting the 'chattering brakes' a week or two ago. Then the ABS light came on. I just checked www.fordpartsonline.com and you can get the front hub assembly for $283 plus shipping. I believe that you can only buy the entire assembly, not just parts (but I have been wrong on this before). The spindle is another $175 if you damage it. I've got about 80K miles and have never had oversized tires. But I do tow a heavy trailer regularly. Not something I can afford to do right now, but I guess I have no choice.

I just picked up a 05 X last week & I noticed while detailing the undercarrige that the front axle ujoints have grease zerks on them, did not notice on my 03 X. I plan on going over it better on Sat. cause I think I noticed grease zerks on the driveshaft ujoints also.
