I was looking at the exhaust on my X this weekend (I've got a '03 5.4L) and noticed that it appears to have two mufflers. The first is a very large muffler just behind the cat and the other is at the rear just before the exhaust exit. Is this second muffler really a muffler or some kind of resonator? Are there any issues with removing it?

I don't know the answer to your question, but I like the title, "Exhausting question". I love puns.

If it helps any, my 6.8L does not have the extra "muffler". I have no idea what it is. Good luck.

I've seen stuff like this on other vehicles, but they've usually been very small and used as "resonators" or some such. This thing is big -- the size of a typical muffler. I think I'm going to just take the thing off...
