Since eveyone here has been so helpful over time, I wanted to thank you. Also, I wanted to give you my experience on an issue:
I had complained of a clunking in the front of the truck (2000 V-10 Limited 4x4)....sounded like it was originating right under the driver's feet. Some advised that it might be the sway bar links, while others said it might be the body mount(s) Hence, I tightened EVERYTHING under the front end (sway bar mounts, endlinks, body mount, track bar mounts, etc......there wasn't a bolt on the front end that wasn't tightened - almost to the point of breaking them)
Well, the other day, I was riding slowly next to a wall - happened to have my window down - and I heard something coming from the rear of the truck. When I got home, I noticed that my Hellwig rear swaybar end links had gotten loose. Got down there, tightened everything up, and NO MORE CLUNKING under the driver's feet! Never would've guessed that the rear sawybar mounts could/would transmit that type of sound all the way up to the front (couldn't really hear the noise in the rear), but it sure did! Therefore, if you're battling the "bad body mount" blues, if you've installed a rear bar, check it out.....that might be your problem!
Experiencve offered just in case this might be of benefit to others.....................

I have the same sound on a '01 Limited V8 4x2. However I don't think mine has a rear sway bar. Any ideas? TOM

Yes, I have an idea. I had the same clunk about a year ago. Took it to the dealer, but they found nothing. A few weeks later, it seemed to get worse. So I climbed underneath and found that one of the upper shock mounts was loose. Actually, both bolts were missing. Took it to a different dealer and had them put two new (hardened) bolts in and the problem was solved.

Same thing here, left rear shock flopping around, could not figure it out until I went over a dip in the road and the truck bounced more than it should... Pulled over right there, grabbed the flash light the top two bolts were nowhere to be seen.... Took back to SEARS (Monroe Reflex), had them replace the bolts on both sides to be on the safe side, now a quiet ride again

I experienced a grinding sound from the front end of my Avalanche and the dealership was certain it was the front differential, until they mounted accoustic sensors to the underbody of the truck and drove it around. The sensors indicated that the noise was coming from the transmission, but instead of hearing it there, we were both hearing it in the front. It is amazing how far sound travels through metal. (As can be confirmed by anyone who as a child - or an adult - has put their ear on a rail to listen to oncoming trains.) |
