This question has been asked before by one of our members and i dont recall if it was answered. When the rear hatch is left open; will the interior lights eventually go off? I am pretty sure that mine did a while ago when i went golfing and had to wait for my friend (he's like a woman, takes forever) i just cant remember, i'm old. If there are ladys reading this, i am sorry for the remark.

The interior lights will go off after a wait of approximately 10 to 15 minutes. This applies to all four doors and the rear hatch as well. I've had to drive with the rear hatch open at night and the lights do go off. I still want to be able to turn them [all] off manually with the light switch. I replace my switch with one from an 03 Expedition. The switches are the same except that on the Expedition you can roll the dimmer switch down to a click that turns OFF all the interior lights. I want mine to do that...

I concur with Mike. My lights will go out after about 15 minutes or so. I've never actually clocked them, but that sounds about right.
Mike, you drove with the hatch up? What was that like? A lot of turbulence? What about exhaust fumes? Were they bad?

One of the activities I do with my EX is to go kayaking. We put two 15' kayaks on a Yakima rack and a third boat [12'] inside. Of course there isn't room to close the rear hatch so it is tied down with a pair of bungie cords. I don't want it to bang around. I didn't notice any exhaust fumes thank goodness as my EX is a diesel. The only real difference we noticed was it was a bit noiser than usual.

Sounds like a great idea to me... |

Yes, I did replace the switch[s], however, there was NO change in its operation. The new switch comes with one extra pin. There is no corresponding wire for it in the EX. The switches look identical withe the exception of the extrea pin. The only difference is that the roller switch has a click stop at both ends. One is to turn the lights ON and the other [down] is supposed to turn them OFF. Ford won't give me any assistance in this as it was determined that EX owners would have no reason to turn off the interior lights. Funny, the Escape, the Explorer, and the Expedition all have the ability to turn off the lights. Are we really that different? I spoke with Gearman some time back regarding this; he said he'd look into it. The dealer charges $68 for the switch, but my dealer must have felt sorry for me and sold it to me at employee discount. I paid $34. The installation was a sinch as it has a modular plug in back. You just have to be careful removing the old switch as you must pry it out with a screwdriver.
