I was browing throught the site a few weeks ago and noticed a post regarding a low pitched humming sound that comes from the rear of the X when driving around 70. I can't find the original message any longer, but does anyone know what is causing the sound (I only wonder because I am now noticing it -- shouldn't have read the original post -- now I have a sound bugging me ).

Thanks...

BTW -- Just some bragging rights for those of us who have 5.4 X's. I towed 5 horses last weekend -- trailer, gear and animals totalling 7200# and had no trouble. Sure, it wasn't the fastest thing, but I was able to make some pretty steep climbs and maintain 45mph (65, which happened to be the speed limit, on the flats). Sure, those of you with psd were passing me doing 80, but hey... I can't complain. I remember driving up hills in my Dad's burb only going 35 (empty) up steep climbs.

Ken
I am happy that you like your 5.4. I can tow your X and your trailer and maintain 45mph. This is not a flame (i love you bro) I am just stating what a PSD can do with some improvements. I looked into 5.4's and V10's. they dont cut it. The diesel is not for everybody and i respect that, but God do i love them.

I have noticed a hum when I begin to approach 75 mph and it gets more pronounced at 80 to 85. I believe it to be the rear end humming at higher speeds. Don't know if it will cause premature damage or not at this speed, so I am concerned about it!

I have the same problem but at 85. I wish someone could figure it out so I could get it fixed. It would be nice to just tell the mechanic the problem instead of having a mechanic start from scratch. Does anyone have more info??? Brian

I have the same problem. It is a driveline issue. The rear driveshaft vibrates at higher speeds. I bet the guy with the same problems has a differnt gear ration then you thats why his happens faster at 85mph. You need to keep taking it to the Dealership and make sure they right it on your service record. " Costumer complains of humming or vibration felt at speed xx" The reason is that Ford is full of crap and will keep putting it off tell the warrenty is over then you will be stuck with the bill for all the dammage. I Have a limited 4x4 2000 and i complained but they never wrote it down. At 48,000 miles the transmission started to slip. Then the torque converter blew. Ford after fighting with them replaced both the torque and the tranny. (With a refurbished one). Now at 70,000 fluid is leaking every where, the vibration is so bad that i am scared to drive above 65. Ford told me that my exstended warrenty is over. With a new tranny around 9k and a torque around 1k and new pinion seals around 1.5K i am in Ford hell. Please do not take this vibration as nothing important. Ford is being invesigated by the Gov for a flaw in the breaking system on the 350 an Excursion. If yours pulls to the left or right when the break is applied aggresivley at high speeds then you should complain about it. Also there is a flaw in the steering box shaft that can cause it to break rendering the vehicle non controlable. 6 Fatalities from breaks not working, 8 from steering shaft, 2 from wiper motor short. Go to this link and complain and find out the truth about Ford and Excursion Lemon.
