have you had your speedo recalibrated for the larger tires ???
That would make a BIG difference in both the mpg AND the speedo readings...

I was going to respond in a similar fashion until I realized that with larger tires, your fuel economy would actually be higher. When the trip computer thinks you have driven 500 miles and are getting good fuel economy, when you have in reality driven 750 miles, you would be getting even better fuel economy if the speedometer was recalibrated.

The console on my 02 NEVER varies more than a 1/10th mpg NO MATTER WHAT I do !!! What an absolutely worthless piece of s**t !!! How about the rest of you - COMMENTS?????

I agree with the others. Reset your trip computer. My average fuel economy does not vary more than 0.1 mpg, either. That is because it is the _average_ fuel economy, not the immediate fuel economy. I wouldn't expect an average fuel economy to vary.

ANOTHER COMPLAINT: WHY doesn't FORD put a stainless steel exhaust system on a FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLAR VEHICLE ?????? The bean-counting scum should be crucified!! All it took was ONE trip to New York in the past winter and the whole thing is RUST CITY !!!!! I am NOT HAPPY and can't believe this CHEAP CR*P !!!! COMMENTS?????

I do not know what they put on the roads in New York, but in Alberta, Canada, the standard exhaust systems seem to fare rather well on the other Excursions and Superduties that I have seen.

Quote:
EVEN ANOTHER COMPLAINT: Man, I am miserable today!! It's great having the FUEL FILTER so readily accessible BUT, whrer does the drain off go??? I can't see how you're supposed to "catch" it as it drains. The fuel falls into the black abyss of V-land!!!! This can't be good for the block or gaskets!! What I do now is not drain the bowl, open the top and use a syringe to suck out the fuel, take out old filter, wipe out the bowl totally dry, replace filter, fill bowl with ATF or Marvel oil and "close her up- COMMENTS??

While I can understand that a $2.00 hose would solve this problem, it is also something that does not occur very often, and your syringe and wiping method seems to work. For something that does not need to be done often, I do not think it is a big issue. Pulling an engine requires pulling bolts, hoses, belts, and connectors, but most people do not mind because it is something done every 10 - 20 years.

Quote:
Seriously guys- these EXCURSIONS and all the big FORD trucks are UNGODLY EXPENSIVE and we work too damned hard for our money. I am NOT HAPPY with FORD's response to problems and the STUPID, CHEAPSKATE corner-cutting they do!!!

A fully-loaded Excursion is within $2,000 of the cost of a fully-loaded Suburban. The point is that when you are the only game in town, you can charge more. But people bought them - we bought them - and didn't think it was a bad deal at the time. I still don't.

Quote:
Even the USELESS TRANNY GAUGE - nothing more than a glorified IDIOT LIGHT!!! This is an insult to our intelligence.

And if the transmission temperature gauge worked the way we wanted, you would have the other half of the owners constantly calling their dealerships, wondering why their transmission temperature gauge is always at the bottom of the gauge or always at the top. You have to build a vehicle for the lowest common denominator.

Quote:
I also notice WAY TOO MANY of ypu "faithfull" have had TRANNYS explode at UNDER 100,000 miles- ABSOLUTE BULLSH*T !!!!

I have heard a lot of this regarding Dodge, but rarely Ford. It is also difficult to make a general statement, since there are the two tranmissions in use right now.

Quote:
Her's another BEAUTY- DO ANY OF YOU EVER NOTICE HOW CLOSE THE TILT WHEEL "BAYONET" IS TO YOUR KNEE???? "RECALL, attn: HTSA"?????

I have long legs and yet this has never been a problem for me. I have not heard of anyone else complaining of it, either.

Quote:
Here's the ULTIMATE QUESTION- DOES ANYBODY AT FORD GIVE A DAMN ?????? DO ANY OF HENRY'S BOYS READ THESE POSTS??? OR, are they too busy spending their paychecks???

If you are concerned about 'Henry's Boys' reading these posts, you are using the wrong outlet. Contact Ford directly if you want someone to hear. I have done so on two occasions and they have been more than helpful. If you yell in the wrong direction, chances are the person you are trying to get to listen to you will not.

Quote:
FINAL CHALLENGE - IF ANYONE AT FORD REALLY CARES GIVE ME A CALL 561 644 4036 or Email gregrac@li-ny.net !!!!! YEAH, I appreciate the folding chairs but there are TOO MANY BOUNDARIES that need to be addressed by myself, the other owners and FORD.

If someone from Ford actually reads this, I would be both surprised and impressed. While new here, I am quite certain that this is not a Ford-operated forum and they are under no obligation to read nor respond.

OK boys - here's an update/reaction/comment/retraction/more venom on my 2002 Excursion Limited 7.3 PSD 4x4 and my initial post:

1. Mileage console- RETRACTION/ THANK YOU - I shoulda' read the owners manual!!! As Kevin Curry and Mike Gail so correctly pointed out, pushing the two buttons either simultaneously OR at the same time, resets the AVERAGE mpg to zero and a new average is calculated . Guess what - the average is uncannily accurate, as I found out on my last trip from Florida to NY to NC to FL.!
BTW, on all my vehicles, I ALWAYS log and calculate the exact mpg and recommend you do the same. This is a great way to monitor the Xs' health. My X now has 89,983 miles on it (purchased March 02) and all of a sudden is getting 20 mpg solo (no trailer) at 65 mph hwy!!
BUT, I'm still a little pixxed off- for FIFTY GRAND you should be able to choose average or peak MPG!!

2. Exhaust rusting- NO EXCUSE!! The system should be stainless and the tip should be longer or deflected downward to keep Dr. Diesel's soot signature off the body. My truck was only driven ONCE in snow/salt and the whole system is rusted- NOT GOOD !!
There is no undercoat for an exhaust system- it has to be high quality from day one and stainless is entirely justified at the 50G level!!! And yes, I know there are aftermarket systems
like Banks!!

3. Fuel filter draining- I did the job on a gravel driveway so MAYBE there is a hose down to the bottom of the motor but, during my endless oil changes (90k) I've never seen a hose or pipe. The Ford manual shows the fuel being caught in a rag under the bowl. I'm due for another filter change and I'll checkfor the "mythical hose" then.

4. Cost/value ratio/how hard we work for our money- What's wrong with some of you ??
You and I just spent $50,000 dollars on probably the most expensive luxury/passenger/SUV Ford makes and some of you DEFEND Ford and don't even notice how many of us had trannies explode under 100,000 miles or think the tranny "scam-gauge" is fine or that it's OK for a truck to be designed so the exhaust rusts like a Vega.
Hey, when I sign the papers for a $50G vehicle I fully expect a trouble free tranny, motor and all the "big stuff" for at least 100k!! My X had these problems so far:

A. Alternator failed at 70k ($300. parts + labor).
B. The stereo CD had a console bolt through the harness so one side didn't work FROM THE
FACTORY . This was was pencil-whipped from factory to dealer prep checklists.
C. Steering box has a five degree deadspot/free play from day one so it never tracks
totally straight and drifts over ANY road variation. INCREDIBLE DUM LOOKS from
the service writer and never a fix. I'll adjust the 'box myself some day.
D. Water leaking at right rear door- I still have to bring it back.
E. Intermittent low speed SURGE - more on this on my new post!!!!

My point is not that I hate the truck or Ford- I expect almost an outright BJ or at least concern when there's a problem - not a dum look and the typical " they didn't get to that problem" or some lame, obviously unconcerned "adjusted tire pressure' etc!! These trucks cost more than most Jaguars and those guys just about bl*w you when there's a problem.
Guess what happened when i called Ford re alternator?? I spent quite a while on the phone and was told to go back to the dealer and talk with their consumer rep. Does that make sense?
I'll repeat myself again- I've always been a Ford enthusiast and try to only buy American so what you're hearing is frustration at a truck that I really like BUT expect much better support and quality from!!

5. Steering wheel "bayonet'- I'm serious about this. I sit close to the wheel (short arms) and this adjuster/stiletto aims right at my knee!! Try it yourself and imagine the knee damage in a bad collision..
While you're at the truck check YOUR steering box too by turning the unlocked wheel with the engine off. See how many degrees of slop/freeplay/deadspot you have. Then, on the highway, move the wheel back and forth that same amount- nothing happens until you touch a lane divider strip. My 81 Rabbit Diesel has less freeplay at 219,000 miles!!

I honestly believe that Ford DOES make a great truck BUT, the follow up, dealer service, quality and response to the consumer/enthusiast needs a great big Tim McGraw "boot in the *ss".
Thanks to Scott Coates, Kevin, Mike, Gearman for your help and support!!!
I'm still shocked at how many of you defended the corner cutting and are way too ready to "drink the Kool Aid" when it comes to what you get for your money!!! Yeah, I know any vehicle can be improved etc, etc...... BUT, shouldn't it be reliable for at least 100k ?????

COMMENTS ?? BTW Boar Ral- do you really think these problems or bad compromises are
acceptable- you sound like a Ford rep. Aren't some of you other guys also pi**ed off ?? A whole page was filled with Ladies Home Journal pandering ! You're the boss and if she doesn't like it let her ride in some sh*tbox Hontoyukinissuzuxus fake SUV !!!

Oh yeah, guess what, NOBODY at Ford does read this forum!! I know damn well if I was a ford rep, I WOULD!!

Ciao, Godfather

Dave.

I didn't get mine until I went on line with Ford. I quoted their policy of Customer Satisfaction. "Don't say NO" or words to that effect. And 'lo and behold' I was told I DO qualify for the chairs and within a couple of weeks they arrived via UPS.
