You don't say what your year and engine is, but I presume gas engine...
And from your description is this probably pre-detonation ?
NOT a good thing if you hear it... it could still be happening when you don't hear it !
Sorry for the primer, but just trying to help:
The spark is supposed to fire the fuel JUST before the piston gets to top dead center so it allows the explosion to be at the right moment when the upward piston motion is ready to turn around and be forced down...
if it fires to soon the explosion is happening while the piston is still coming up and the expanding gases are 'fighting' the upward travelling piston... And wearing on your piston rods and bottom end
This is usually what people describe as 'marbles' you may be hearing...
Typically it is an octane problem, but if you've gone to a higher octane then I would get the timing checked quickly...
Good luck and hope this helps...
Apologies if you already knew this... betta to say it and you know then not say it !

On one of the fords forums a few X owners were saying that they had very much the same noise almost sounds like valves but they said it was exhaust flutter especially the heat shields one guy had his tack weldeld and no more noise so i will try that approach also my x is a 2001 with v-10 and 20,000 miles on it im game for any suggestions! |

Demand to the dealership and Ford that it be fixed. If they can't then tell them you want to do a buy back or lemon it out. On a new car this is unacceptable . After sending the price of half a house, you should get a product that lasts longer then a pair of shoes. Ford loves to drag you out tell 36,000 then dump you with all the repair bills. So Make sure you call costumer support and complan at this Government site so that Ford is made accountable for there Lemons.

Good luck

You CAN cancel overdrive at 55mph. That's not too fast...
Inspect you geat shields and the inspection plate between the engine and tranny. If you bend the plate the noise (if that is the cause) will go away. Do you notice any performance decrease when you hear the sound?
DOes it only do it at 55mph or at around 1800RPM in all gears.

I get the same noise from my 2001 V10 4x4 when I am towing my trailer and there is a high load on the engine. Yes switching out of overdrive does make it stop. I have searched the Ford CQIS database (I have access) for any service messages or technicial bullitens that may address this noise, but there are none. It really sounds like spark knock, but that is hard to believe because there is a knock sensor that retards the timing when noise is detected. If there was a fault with this sensor it would set the check enging light. I am going to ask one of the engineers who calibrates this powertrain and see if he know anything. I will post a followup message when I hear something.

Hi Steve,
I have a 2000 X V10 4x4.
Sound like detonation.
Mine used to do it under a load like passing or going up a steep grade.
Sounds like pinging.
I started using Gumout fuel sys cleaner at every oil change and it stopped.
Hasn't done it since.
If its more like a rapid rattle its the exhaust shields.
I've had mine in MANY times for this fix but they never could fix it.
You just have to get someone to run it up in gear while holding the brakes and listen from the side to try and find the bad shield.
Getting it to stop is another story.
Ford jacked with mine about four times and never could fix it.
Mine is the muffler shield. I've even thought about removing it but I'm afraid it would mess something up from the heat.
Mine isn't that loud any more but I can feel it at idle and it's annoying.
Thanks,
SRO2000X
I love my truck! |

SRO, no sure wihich heat shield it is but I just put a hose clamp around my offending heat shield to stop the noise.
________________
I'm surprised that you are all telling the guy what the cause is when we don't even know what engine he has! Heck we don't even know the year truck!
Let's get more info. It could be exhaust flutter whose true fix is a very expensive one. Or it could be a shield or inspection plate. We should have him try the simple stuff first, right?
But first, he needs to fill us all in with a bit more info.
